"Obviously the album age affects how much you judge the trend"
You mind explaining this? Not sure what you mean
The older an album is, the less harshly I judge how often itās in my rotation. Graduation is 19 years old but itās a certified classic imo because I still play it very often and it sounds fresh af. Mr morale is 4 years old and I only remember it exists when itās mentioned online. section 80 is 15 years old so I still hold it in high regard because itās been replayable over the years even if it wasnāt this year. The older an album is, the more leeway it gets.

Sounds like a flawed way to look at music but hey, it works for you, salute
If you had to pick a favorite song from (just one per) each Cole album, what would your tracklist look like?

Why for some of the sample choices, interpolations would be to serve as a love letter to hip hop and the why for some of the lyrics and references to transport you to his home in different time periods
The why for splitting the album in 2 disc would be to juxtaposed the different mindset at different ages towards his pillars (city, music, wife). Disc 29 being about falling out or wavering love to contrast with Disc 39 being about rediscovering and reaffirmation of love for those 3 pillars is how I took it
Nice perspective that I didnāt consider
Iām not huge Cole stan but an avid listener nonetheless.. it was harder for me to discern the threading in some of his ideas as to why a few of these stories were so important to him.
I got a bit lost sometimes but he brought me back around in the backhand of the 2nd disk

Will it sound strange if I say that after listening to the Cole record all week, I've realized that he doesn't have a strong 'WHY". Like the sequencing, cohesion, sample choices, some of the themes.. I get the concept, but the execution doesn't drive the point in a very 'impactful' way.. and I think because it gives the 'how and the 'what' but there isn't a strong 'WHY'.. which exposes a lack of intentionality.
Perfectly said, and this is my biggest pet peeve with albums in general. I hate that lack of intentionality s***, especially when I canāt realistically expect every song on any album to give me an equal dopamine boost as is, like you could at least make it feel like a purposeful whole work artistically
These songs are connected by torn thin ass threads from a gildan shirt

These songs are connected by torn thin ass threads from a gildan shirtā - great metaphor.. listening I can see logically why the music matters to him, especially the Fayetteville stories, but they donāt feel very remarkable or impactful on him or the way he expresses this doesnāt make me care enough to reallly immerse myself in his world.. the connected tissue that should tie his āthesisā together just make this album seem fragmented..
Like the story of his ex homie that was gay and died just didnāt land the way I expected it too. It felt like he just needed an interesting story to prop up whatever point that heās driving.. and I think itās cause he lacks clear vision.
I wanna just do it over.. develop a stronger storyline w/cohesion and have the music reflect that well ..

Yep, very insane to Jude music based on how often I listen to it and how much enjoyment it brings to my ear. A very otherworldly concept

Nun wrong with that. Just think it misses something crucial about how much we evolve and grow as human beings and something that didn't click back then might all of a sudden hit because you've gone through the s*** that is being presented by the artist.
The age of the album is way less important than yours imo, but like I said, if that approach works for you, good for you. But also, sometimes you just don't enjoy something because you'll never get used to the delivery and that's cool too. My point is there's more to music than how often you replay an album.

I kinda agree with this. Not everything released before I was born will sound totally fresh. Some songs donāt sound fresh but I love them. Just depends on how you consume music
Dude retired for 8 minutes man
Yes by critics and the industry but Iāve never cared about their opinion lol. Replayability is the biggest metric of how I judge music and Kendrickās always fallen short outside of gkmc and damn. If I donāt feel like playing your album a year later, itās not worth much to me.
That replayabilty is part of the ātimelessnessā part of determining if something is a classic which is why I laugh when heās given so many classics. I judge Kanye, Drake, Future, and Cole by the same metric and they just happen to make more enjoyable music imo
I just think there's levels
like I'm not listening to All Eyez on Me and Life After Death all the f***in' time but they're considered classics by most metrics and hiphop standards. S*** I wouldn't be surprised if most people don't listen to those albums very often really
