Fair enough, but I still don't think the success of Cole's debut album changed anything. Labels still had some interference with the debut albums of new acts moving forward. Maybe not in terms of demanding a hit single beforehand, but they'd still keep their eye on things and make sure the product that was coming out was one they were confident in and in situations where they weren't fully confident, they'd still release the album, but it'd be undershipped (this happened with Logic's major label debut album, which dropped in 2014).

The game has always been that you do well enough on your debut and your future albums get less oversight and interference from the label.

I don't think there are many individual acts that can claim to change the status quo of the industry.

Less oversight I agree but there is still interference in later albums, the Clipse thing being a recent example.

Yeah, trying to credit Cole for causing such a major change in major label exec behaviour is wild, especially at that time in his career.

The change I can credit him for is labels being more comfortable with rappers dropping entire albums with 0 singles/major promo beforehand. Cole did it December 2014 and then Drake did the same 2 months later.

Again the change im referring to is that labels stop prioritizing a big major single as the end all be all of a release for an album. It still matter but labels ALSO realize that artist building a core fanbase is also important and stop prioritizing it.

I explained it last page. CW didnt have a big single before it dropped but still sold 200k fw.

He built up a core fanbase and labels saw that and started implementing that. Label execs literally told cole and ib this lol

With this being a double album and a 4 week rollout there’s no way he doesn’t stay active till The Fall Off drops
