It's funny how some of y'all act like people calling Cole's music boring/uninteresting is the worst thing in the world, especially because it isn't inaccurate. I don't think anyone has ever actually denied Cole's skill and ability as a rapper.

Skimming through Sideline Story and even in a post Kanye context with cudi and Drake rising god damn this is a sensitive emotional vulnerable debut album for a rapper like Cole coming under Hov at this time. This dude was ahead and extremely humble and tapped in. He bared his soul on this for better or worse. And it got some joints. Breakdown is a personal favorite of mine. It really is a Disney channel rap album and I kind of like that. 3 mics is probably fair.

Cole music and this album in particular feels so personal and sincere that it’s almost uncomfortable. He really one of the realest to do it

One of the most important albums of that decade for the BUSINESS of rap because it broke the veil that rap artists needed a hit song to sell units

Fundamentally changed the way fandom was quantified and how seriously the internet was taken imo

People call J. Cole Coleslaw because they consider his music boring/uninteresting. And a lot of rappers get called unflattering names by fans/haters. People have called Jay Z a Camel. It is what it is.

Those aren't even harsh names to call someone imo. There are way worse things to be called.

Not really. Cole had hits (or at least attempts at hits) on that album. Work Out & Can't Get Enough served that purpose. Even In the Morning being tacked on the album was done in the hopes that it'd get more visibility and a better chance to take off.

Oh, of course, no one is arguing that lol. I'm just saying it comes with the territory. If you don't have thick skin, you can't survive the rap game lol.

I believe Can't Get Enough was an even bigger hit lol. That's the only way that album was getting released in the first place. J. Cole said so himself.

Lights Please is such a feat of songwriting even if the messaging did kind of age badly and isn’t as deep as it seemed back then. He made his point really well with the song and it was just a dope song. Hearing that was lowkey a life changing moment. That had me thinking he was Pac for real

The 2Pac influence was all over his first few mixtapes imo

I can’t say that he didn’t build up godly expectations for this album since he’s been teasing it for so long, but I do think he waited the right amount of time post 2024 beef to give everyone some time to come back to earth and just enjoy it for what it is

Can’t Get Enough was the better hit imo it falls way more in line with his previous work than Work Out but Cole also said he was the one to vouch for Work Out as the lead single because the label wanted a different one
