As someone who has a lot of friends who make music and write for people in the industry, I can tell you with confidence that reference tracks are an extremely common practise. This is as easy as Drake & Yachty being in the studio, getting a beat, Drake writing something catchy and Yachty laying down vocals.
Or Drake can write it down and ask Yachty to interpolate his initial melody. I’d say 80% of A-list music you hear has had some form of an initial reference. This illusion of music being a one man show has been badly twisted in modern day.
