Jay Elect is a lil extreme example but he gets the point across. If you have no knowledge of NOI/5%, Islam, esoteric religion/myths, random films.
You might be able to still enjoy the production and the sound of him rapping, but the lyrics probably make no sense at all to you, and the references go over your head most the time.

I feel this is why Gunna is so succesful as of recent, you know what you're getting - a nice melodic beat and a nice melodic triplet flow you can tune in and out of, you're not missing much if you miss any bars the same way you would listening to Jay Z. A lot of mainstream fans just listen to the actual music underneath too and less lyrics. I don't think it's a coincidence that the more commercially sucessful rap became the less lyrical it became.
Begs the question why people conflate popularity and quality if it’s obvious that to be more appealing to people you have to dial back lyrics, flows, production, etc. into something more accessible and easy listening
