This is one of the albums I actually listened to in 2010
For the first few years I played it so much that eventually I got sick of it and only played it like once a year since
Also going to rewatch the Runaway film
Day 20:
"Dark Knight feeling, die and be a hero. Or live long enough to see yourself become a villain"

2010 - Power and Runaway videos drop. Following a Kanye rollout for the first time. I listen to the album. I don't really get it on first listen but it sounds good. Over time it becomes one of the reasons I get invested in music. The production, vocals, everything, the vision behind it, makes it feel bigger than life. It made me feel things I've never felt before about music.
2015 - I see Kanye live for the first and only time. He's like an hour and half late. But when he shows up with Stronger I forget all about it and enjoy the show. The highlight of the show? Him performing Runaway with an emotional outro he usually does on shows. Can't find out the exact one but it was different from the song. Definitely felt like watching a legend do it.
2023 - It's been a few months since I played a Kanye album. I listened to MBDTF and watched the Runaway short film as I do when I listen to it after a long time. I still sing along to the lyrics. These songs were played again and again for years so it's all clear in my memories. I still think the production is elite and impressive musically. But I think to myself what would be this album's legacy?
I assume most of us are in this website because we were Kanye fans. And I can't pretend like I don't think he's a good musician or that he made good songs before. So can't we just separate the art from the artist? A lot of artists are problematic people but when it's all said and done, we still listen to some albums by some of these artists and take them as they are. Classics.
This specific album is a little difficult to do this with. The whole context behind it is aftermath of what used to be Kanye's biggest controversy at the time: interrupting Taylor Swift's winning speech at the VMAs. Kanye was already a questionable figure because of 808s & Heartbreak which was a controversial sound, and because of his attitude around that time. But this was the last straw for mainstream media and they did try to cancel him at the time, with even Obama calling him an a******!
So in context of the album, what is it about? Kanye says: yes I'm an a******, I'm everything you said I am, but I'm owning it. And he backs it up with some of the best music he ever made. Later in interviews he claims MBDTF is fan service in a way and he doesn't feel complete with it like other albums. So musically, he tried and succeeded making up for his words and actions. And yet, he doesn't try to claim he's actually a nice guy or atone for his mistakes. Instead he presents himself as this anti hero figure. And as the listener you're supposed to root for Kanye.
For years I rooted for Kanye. But can I root for him now? Even after everything? Listening to this album this has a lot of lines that sound funny in retrospect. All of the lights lyrics about his wife and kids leaving him, Gorgeous lyrics where he presents himself as a martyr. It's all about drama and all about his character. It's not just about his personality, it's a cult of personality.
And watching the short film makes it more clear. One, even the act of making a short film says "I'm trying to make something bigger than music". And the content of the film itself, Kanye saving Phoenix and showing her the world, followed by amazing visuals, but the world is not ready for her, doesn't accept her at all and eventually she leaves. What or who does the Phoenix represent?
In conclusion, I like this album, I think it's great. I think it absolutely stands out in 2010 and while it has a 2010 sound, it transcended it. And I truly believe (and hope someone proves me wrong) no other rapper could make this kind of album again.
But at the same time, I can't listen to this and see Kanye as the anti hero, the legend, the genius anymore. So I'm not sure what this album means to me anymore. I'm not sure if it's still beautiful, or just dark and twisted.
Favorite songs: Dark Fantasy, Power (including the short film version), All of the Lights, Devil In a New Dress, Runaway.
