Ironically, this type of entitled attitude is why some of the best rappers start to lean away from rap. Even Phonte's last project veered from rap despite him being a talented lyricist.
Kendrick has straight up disassociated himself from the rap community on social media despite rap still being his passion and 3 Stacks just said "Fuck it" and gave people a flute album.
The modern rap community has become very entitled and impatient. Niggas won't even let rappers take a break anymore even if there's good reasons for it(COVID, family, remaking the album, etc).
Kenny already said that he was gonna drop a rock inspired album in either 2020 or 2021 but COVID f***ed him up.
the industry has killed the creatives
Don’t think a lot of people really took that line in.
It has to be really REALLY tough in this era where s*** has been so dumbed down and you still looking for meaning during a time where s*** is more meaningless than ever to find inspiration.
People wonder why the kendricks and the andres find trouble getting that fire when it’s like…look at “the culture” bro lol.

I’d take an extended break away from this s*** too/play flutes. These new niggas dont even like words/cant even read!
there are no big 3 type of figures because clearly the idea of 'rapping/singing relatable dude with an overarching vision' was tried time and time again all throughout this and last decade. and its not sticking. otherwise the new big 3 would be something along the lines of JID Cordae and Saba lmao and they'd be multi-platinum musicians by now
“Thats not they goals”
Like they decide the landscape my nigga (in Saba’s case) that’s just how the f*** s*** goes when you’re independent (Saba aint go to a major label)
We REALLY REALLY don’t appreciate or even respect the success that independent artists today are making lmao
I think Saba is f***ing awesome. I still think about this for the first time
And it's dope he made a conscious decision to take full control of his career. All I was just interjecting is that we've had a generation of great MCs that said "nah i'm good off that superstar s***," when they easily could man.

(Insert of another example of them going crazy when they had the opportunity to...)
last thing ill say is that theres definitely a link between this, dare I say, reactionary craving for the reproduction of a more familiar status quo (i.e., possibly having another big 3 or still clinging to the big 3 artists in this context) and core hip hop fanbase getting older
Somebody said months ago the rise of anti-intellectualism been biting this country in the ass. Yall niggas (if it don’t apply let it fly) damn near take pride in not even being in the loop about certain people.
It’s one of the big reasons discussion in this sxn suffers a lot. Niggas say “who” instead of trying to even engage in a discussion around a new artist for…whatever reason.
“Ppl had to be fed by a machine” like…the machine wasn’t just blogs ran by people in they 30s-40s or dedicated A&Rs in that same age bracket that just cared lol. (And now we’re turning into those 30/40 y/os but just lack that same passion and more importantly attention span)
Of course we romanticizing that process cause we was literally just teens during that era but (as someone with a pops that taught at high school for decades) I remember vividly the origins of “yo that Jimmy dude rapping lol wtf” and people not really taking bro seriously til that Replacement Girl joint.
Nostalgia is a d*** my man.

I mean yea that's natural, but I feel like "The big 3" has always been a thing in since the 80s fr
people

retroactively and with that definition in mind -- maybe, but not as a 'concept of the big 3' used to describe the landscape in the moment it happened
even if we go by each decade the 80s had run dmc beastie boys ll cool j and public enemy which is already a ton of people and you can only pinpoint the 'big 3' arbitrarily. the 90s hands down belongs to big and pac which is two. 00s had fif em wayne hov kanye which is five dudes already without mentioning snoop and dre
the big 3 is a specific definition (that id say only became relevant in the last couple of years bc the third person was always up for a debate) that only fits its specific timeframe in a way that makes sense

nah you're 100% right
Ya'll all in here writing all these twitter think pieces and essays but I'ma leave this right here.
The introduction of this song by the great Yasin Bey explains it perfectly

???
As far as quality numbers impact go I’d put future with the other two instead of jermaine.

we cant not mention that a lot of talk against injustice that largely inspired a lot of artists in the 10s is now proven basically pointless because nothing came out of it. at best you big up your activist position up until corporate interest steps in and supports it to a certain degree but never further
not one new rapper on a major label would say free palestine now without getting immediately blackballed into oblivion. people already know how it is and what type of messaging you're supposed to transmit and that puts a lid on the entire conscious side of things
No one listened to that last Kendrick album either.
I think it went platinum and grossed the highest selling rap tour ever.
