I don't recall the exact post but I think it depends on how the teacher handles it. If they're literally forcing you to pick a pronoun then that's weird. If "I don't really care" or whatever is an acceptable answer that's fine. I don't think there's a problem with having the topic touched on and making it accessible for people who do care about it.

I get what you're trying to say with "Fuck identity" and the post I originally quoted, but not many people are just gonna roll with that extremely blurred line of thought. Most people are exactly the opposite. So I think being passive aggressive towards the people that are at least trying to understand and lean towards a different way of thinking is reductive and counterproductive. I'm not saying give them a cookie, but cmon man.

What the initial post sounded like is that the part of the users grade depended on picking a pronoun. I saw another user saying they're work pressured them into using one in their emails. I think both situations are ridiculous, you shouldn't force people to have to describe themselves a certain way.

But yeah, in this hypothetical situation, it's the professors right to run their class however they want. If they would like for everyone to pick a pronoun, but the option of saying "no" or "i don't care what you call me" or anything at all, then sure that's fine. I still think it's weird but whatever, it's the teachers class.

What I think is crazy is if you would be forced to pick a "they/them" etc pronoun and if you didn't your grade is affected. The only acceptable alternative imo is if it's a gender studies class, then it actually pertains to what you're studying.

We obviously are looking at this from slightly different sides and have different levels of investment for how much we care about this subject, but yeah I agree we're more or less on the same page at the end of the day.

Cis means that you identify with your sex, it has nothing to do with sexual preference

If your male (born with male reproductive system) and you identify as a man :you're a cisgendered man

Other example:

• a female (born with female reproductive system) that identifies as a man : they're a transgendered man

yeah i went to a school w/ a rly liberal student body + faculty n pronouns were never part of my humanities/social sciences class gradings

but if they were that'd be free points to let me skip an assignment
