nah @op got a point. there's always been those folks at the margins like Ish, Yasiin, Earl, MIKE that came at it from a very left-wing angle, but the mainstream - I wanna say at least since Jay Z and the 00s the rap mainstream has been basically right wing

the actual values rappers rep are reactionary af when u look at most of them thru history

I would say there was maybe still some subversive potential in the aspiring for capital in the 80s, but that was out the window once it took off and you had actual business ppl running s***

I always think about this quote from ride from dg

"Alec Empire: What's the worst Hip Hop record ever made in your opinion?

Stefan Burnett: Too many come to mind to single one out. Honestly, I don't like most of the hip hop I hear lately....shameless pride in total ignorance pushed over spineless beats that sound like senility....oppressor worship force fed to the masses by entertainers disguised as artists... There are rappers I'm feeling right now like, "Fuck, they got that S***!!", but as a whole I know hip hop could be far more than it presently is and I want to see that happen."

Oppressor worship is a phrase that pops into my head a lot, esp when i hear people rapping singing about consumerist s*** and money etc

Hyper capitalist and consumerist values aren't exclusive to right wing ideology at all. They are just as indicative of being liberal, conservative, centrist or even left leaning.

They just obviously aren't socialist or leftist tenants.

Jay Z has been the face of black capitalism for the last 20 years and he's pretty clearly a liberal.

Also like, hip hop is 90% a black American genre. I don't think anything that black can ever be labeled as fundamentally right wing. Even rappers like Kodak who support Trump are looked at as a joke from both sides. Right wing ideology is fundamentally designed to place anything black facing beneath it.

I think maybe a better way to phrase what op is getting at is that hip-hop inadvertently embraces a lot of right-wing values even while seeing itself as revolutionary/ anti-establishment

like, Jay Z just took it to a different level but hip-hop in general is black capitalism through and through

there's maybe a case to be made that the reason the genre was able to thrive so much (becoming the most popular in the world end of last decade I think) is that the seeds for this corruption and exploitation were always there

the ad hominem attacks at op are lame, I think this is a good discussion to be had rn, as we witness a complete emptying of whatever progressive movement ambitions there once were in hip hop in favor of Travis Scott festival headline crowds

for me this was def a hard pill to swallow over the past 10 years seeing ppl I thought of as punk and anti-establishment growing up as a teen, like Tyler and Frank out of Odd Future, just completely embrace money, power, consumerism

and ofc especially witnessing Kanye's crashout and how his politics could derail into something so extreme

because all 3 of these things are attitudes you can find in leftist spaces too.

Tell me how brand worship is exclusively right wing lol

I didn't say anything about brand worship lol, and I truly don't believe a person can be leftist while defending "hyper capitalism"

I don't agree with OP's take on hip hop though

Main thing it promotes are hyper capitalist individualism, social chauvinism, brand worship. All the biggest media people and rappers are outwardly right wing. When are people gonna acknowledge this and let the genre die fr as being some kind of voice for anyone?

theres truth to this but 'right wing' is too vague and asking to let the genre die aint it obviously

you can say that its a pro-capitalist genre with capitalist roots and with individualistic values brought up in its core when it becomes exposed to white audiences. ultimately it 'requires' an artist to play the music industry game and therefore its a pipeline to the grander american narrative too

most rap fans are somewhere on the left spectrum lmao. Maybe take a look at country fans and see where they stand for a better example

country and folk music at their core are very much anti establishment. everybody hates 'the man,' it just depends on whos coopting the mode of expression

You might’ve not given the best example but I’ll make this hot take: despite black America having high numbers for democratic votes the black community (and in result hip hop) is fundamentally right wing.

I think the Black Americans are fundamentally right leaning argument begins and ends at religion and maybe being pro 2A

Yall gotta understand where the average rapper is coming from. Like Tyler isn’t a hood nigga or anything like that but his mom was in a shelter when he was coming up.

A young man coming from that situation is gonna have money as one of his main motivations for making it in music.

Like how is Frank not anti establishment? He said f*** the Grammys way before it was cool, finessed his record label, and moved on his own terms. Came out during a time when homophobia was very much still accepted in hip hop when he was a hip hop adjacent artist. All of that is negated because he sells jewelry?

leftists think being a leftist = being left wing as if it isnt quite extreme on the spectrum. like bro, thats not what right and left wing means. by that logic, barely anyone ever has been left wing.
as if capitalism = right wing if ur a fan of capitalism ur right wing lmfao so silly
news flash most of the left wing historicallly doesnt support socialism in america yall r a minority of the population
