Trap was around for like 8 years before it became the dominant genre of rap lmao

Trap from the 2000s is not the same Trap we got in 2016 though. It was incredibly dumbed down lyrically and even on a production standpoint

hip-hop in its rock's early-mid 2000s era. its either played out corny with everyone doing the same sound or just old heads wanting music that fails to capture the magic of the past. Nobody coming out with lasting impact.

lol then we need the hip hop version of The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys

Mainstream pop artists are re-releasing their albums like 8 times and remixing songs from a decade ago for tik tok doing way too much, rap isn’t gonna go #1 against that

  • CGI Dog

    i blame pitchfork somehow

Pitchfork after Condé Nast bought them made them only rate mainstream albums high which lowkey made KTT care about numbers

I could say they would’ve fell off immediately and it’s just as provable

Nah Juice was on the rise before he died

2019 was a crazy year for him, between DRFL doing almost 200k and him getting more pop placements with Ellie Goulding, Halsey, Miley Cyrus

    Even commercials

And he gave YB his first top 10 BB hit with Bandit

I'm not sure that a weaker mainstream necessarily means a stronger underground

    mainstream ≠ underground

poor young rap listeners not having their #1s to fall back on

Imagine having to take 30 seconds to search for great hip hop instead of immediately taking what you're given

These are dark times for the genre

First three albums are great but if that's the best this year ends up having to offer it was a terrible year

  • May 26, 2023

Wait what that's a crazy fact

  • May 26, 2023
    Sir Real

    Hip hop will never die.

The fact you equate charts with whether hip hop of all genres is at risk of “dying” tells me all I need to know

It was doing perfectly fine for decades without being the #1 genre in the world. It will be perfectly fine again. This is a necessary correction after years of outsiders and pop bullshit preying on rap

how can you like hip hop and actively root for the genre to die out?

It will never die out to black ppl so it the numbers don’t matter for ue
