To me the series fell off after Black/White 2. Gen 6 wasn't bad per se, but it was just the first example of the series becoming extremely easy and pretty boring. I guess their plan was to make a very accessible Pokemon game because it was their first jump to 3D for a mainline game on the 3DS. It just didn't help that Shin Megami Tensei IV dropped that same year and it gave everything that I felt was missing from the Pokemon series. Similar monster collecting and battling gameplay, much more strategy and buff/debuff moves that were actually relevant to the gameplay, and an interesting story/world.

Later on Gen 7 came along and it was...I mean some people swear by Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, but that gen is what truly killed a lot of my interest in mainline Pokemon games. It's gotten worse since then.
