Watching ur Youtube channel and the fact that most of the writers in shows are from elite institutions is daunting

Like im tryna do this s*** completely off of merit and im doing alright for my age but theres a long way to go

Tina Fey once said that there are two types of comedy writers: Harvard Lampoon writer and Chicago improv types

    vulture.com/2011/03/tina-feys-two-types-of-comedy-writer-harvard-boys-and-crazy-improvisers.html

It is a little sad that so many rooms are like 1/4 to 1/3 Harvard Lampoon people. And that’s not even counting other elite people

Entertainment is so uncertain that it’s hard to get in without being privileged in some manner. It’s why I (somewha stupidly, in retrospect) went to Wall Street first

But you can still make it. So much of it is having the knowledge and desire

For someone who is itt? Send me your script. Lol but idk write a lot. Watch a lot of shows. When I was on blackish, I went back and watched a lot of shows that were before my time. Seinfeld, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, The Larry Sanders Show, etc.

I was surprised how much Garry Shandling was the pioneer of styles used by The Office and Parks & Rec. Mockumentary / show within a show

Comedy writers love Shandling. There’s a reason HBO did an 8 hour or whatever documentary on him when he died. Knowing Shandling will improve your writing and impress writers

My route (which has paid off slowly) is to create intellectual property based off of the screenplay you love, because nobodies gonna actually adapt your screenplay as it is. Spec scripts at their best only serve to get representation. And thats not even a route you wanna go down

Film is an investment, and investors wanna see some sort of preexisting fanbase behind a property to convince themselves the investment isnt as risky

So what i did was take the best thing i wrote and turn it into a comic. Got accepted by only one publisher out of all the ones i applied to. Typical author story.
And the publisher im with sends their IP to stufios to guage interest.

I had a false flag option deal that went through last year.

So yeah at the end of the day if you wanna break into film you need to create IP. F*** scripts only, youre just wasting your time

And Wall Street isn't full of privileged people?

It is of course. I mean that bc I didn’t come from money, I was terrified of going to Hollywood cuz what if it doesn’t work out? People who come from money can always fall back on parents / family so they can go into industries that are uncertain and that typically take years of struggle before succeeding.

It’s why immigrants are all about becoming lawyers / doctors / engineers (and occasionally bad standup who rely on doing exaggerated accents of their parents)

The fact that OP wrote for the Harvard Lampoon (wink wink) and still roleplays as a self-made guy despite insider-trading for 1.2 million USD in his early 20s tells you all you need to know: Contacts are everything and you gotta be at the right place at the right time and know the right people, especially in the entertainment industry, unless your talent is undeniably high (rare).

Of course this wouldn't fit in with the TikTok mentor "immigrant on.his American Dream grind" image that implies everyone can make if it they just work hard enough and believe in themselves

I am very very up front about my path in… it’s on YouTube… I’m not hiding that. The other guy just asked how to get in precisely because he saw on my channel that it’s easier if you’re privileged

I don’t think life is as simple as working really hard. I have the privilege of having gone to Harvard and having written for the Lampoon. Writing for the Lampoon is like a 1,000,000x multiplier on your odds of becoming a successful TV writer. Also insider trading had nothing to do with it. All that did was screw up my career lol. That happened in 2014. I was writing in 2015

But there are non Lampoon people in the industry. The best thing you can do to become a tv writer is go to Harvard and join the Lampoon. The second best is be born to a successful writer or actor or producer in LA. After that, it’s know someone. And after that, it’s write the f*** out of something and put it into the world

And for anyone who is saying “smh you have to know someone” I told you I’ll read your s***. Maybe not immediately, but the offer stands

In my experience, options are often sort of BS. You at least got paid for the option deal right?

Because I’m pretty sure some people try and sign option deals for nothing

Also obviously I am privileged compared to the average person, but I don’t think you understand the kind of privilege at a place like Harvard. Eliot Spitzer’s daughter. Rudy Giuliano’s daughter. I knew a girl whose dad bought The Scream by Edward Munch for $119.9 million

I definitely didn’t think I could just go to Hollywood because if it didn’t work out, I had no rich uncle to fall back on. Maybe I underestimated my own privilege though

Anyway if I’m so privileged and connected, then congrats there is someone on KTT (and TikTok) who is privileged and connected and willing to help people become writers

    1. Insider trading has nothing to do with Hollywood, but the fact that a degreeless guy in his early 20s was even given the chance of insider trading for such an amount of money on Wall Street shows that ultimately just having had been in the Ivy League granted you privileges that a vast majority of mankind does not have. This privilege can carry over to other industries so that you were able to have been in two industries people would kill to be in before reaching the age of 30 (Wall Street and Hollywood). Rationally thinking, it is safe to assume this lifepath wasn't just all a product of talent, unless you are some sort of genius.

    2. Therefore, if you want to be ethical and not prey on the gullibility of people, if there is one piece of advice or perhaps a request I could give you: I really hope that you in your lessons, you don't sell a dream or whatever, but that you just try to teach people the crafts of the trade and remain honest about the nepotism going on. What I wouldn't want to see would be someone saying "THIS is how you get to Hollywood" - God knows the world is full of self-help gurus already, so pardon me if I am overly suspicious of any such activities. Rather, the motto should be: "This is how you write a proper screenplay, the rest is up to you, you may or may not end up doing this as a full-time job."

Yeah. I think lots of people who sell courses are predatory. A lot of people who sell “How to make six figures” courses have never made six figures and they’re only making six figures because they found enough people to buy the course. Although I guess in that case, marketing is a skill

I would never do something like that. And I haven’t sold any courses or anything like that. I could maybe do that down the line, but for now I’m just giving advice in exchange for maybe building a small audience
