They're protesting the situation they're currently in. A large part of that is connected to the fact that the US has had an embargo in place for essentially 60 years, and been bullying them ever since in the goals of containing communism.

This is not to take 100% responsibility away from the Cuban government, obviously because they have an obligation to look out for their people the best they can, however I believe if the embargo is lifted it'd give Cubans more room to breathe so to speak.
