Scorpion a classic album too?

Not that far away honestly despite quality issues
That albums going diamond and only about 10 rap albums have ever done that
That alone opens up the conversation
My turn >>> scorpion tho

i think it's both the oversaturation and the fact that the songs he oversaturated himself with were extremely average. i say this as a massive weeknd stan, i wasn't even that excited for the album because none of the features he dropped leading up to it were particularly good (except for hurricane). if my hype wasn't that high i imagine casual listeners were even less hyped for a new weeknd album.
with that being said, the album clearly surpassed expectations and is the closest he's come to a pure pop masterpiece yet. it will definitely find its following in the years to come, he just did way too much to ensure it would underperform initially lol.
How did it surpass expectations at all? it's been a clear absolute flop & the only success it has is critical acclaim which doesn't mean much these days
It didn't fail & it didn't succeed, I'd actually argue it's a bad album in The Weeknd's catalogue because it doesn't push him forward in any way except musically. And now he has to wait another 2+ years to drop anything that'll hit w/ the mainstream because at this point they're tired of him.
it's the album which made it clear pop is dead in the US & The Weeknd is never hitting Kendrick/Drake levels of popularity and I wouldn't even say he's a top 5 artist in the US anymore popularity wise

i meant quality wise, it surpassed expectations. a lot of people, including myself, expected it to be extremely mediocre, which is why it didn't have much anticipation and left no real impact when it dropped.
