i think it's both the oversaturation and the fact that the songs he oversaturated himself with were extremely average. i say this as a massive weeknd stan, i wasn't even that excited for the album because none of the features he dropped leading up to it were particularly good (except for hurricane). if my hype wasn't that high i imagine casual listeners were even less hyped for a new weeknd album.

with that being said, the album clearly surpassed expectations and is the closest he's come to a pure pop masterpiece yet. it will definitely find its following in the years to come, he just did way too much to ensure it would underperform initially lol.
