He took full credit because he’s smart enough to know that painting it as an accident would not only minimize his ability as a dragon rider to others (aemond clearly cares about how he’s seen) but also I think he knows most people won’t even believe that. There’s layers to his reasoning and him showing remorse in the convo with Sylvie shows the depth everyone is asking for lol

Let’s also not forget the ‘bullied kid into big powerful dragon riding badass’ thing he has going for him that informs 9/10 of his decision making
