You don’t think if Cal actually touched him Nate wouldn’t have brought it up to him when he was about to turn him in? Think logically here. He specifically only mentioned seeing the tapes, and then only imagined Cal doing that to him too because he was scarred by it. There’s no mention, no subtext, no hint, no anything implying that Cal actually touched him. It’s literally clear as day.

If a character explicitly says things happened one way, that’s not “leaving it open to interpretation”. Nate is not an unreliable narrator, nor is he a character that minces his words when he speaks. There is nothing left open to interpretation about Cal and Nate’s relationship.
It sounds like you just want Cal to be that to add another layer of drama to the show, but I promise you it’s as clear as day. There’s nothing ambiguous about it. Nate says when he was 11 he saw the tapes, and then AFTER seeing those tapes, he started having nightmares about Cal touching him. Not before. Specifically AFTER seeing the tapes.
I don’t know how else to break it down for you in a simpler way so you understand. Cal’s not a pedo.
Cal was sleeping with other people and recording it, and verbally / possibly physically abusing Nate. That’s why he hates him. He was not sexually assaulting him.
This show is known for using dream sequences that are visual representations of emotions and/or symbolism. They are not actual events that happened. That was not a flashback, it was a dream sequence. Because like Nate said, he was having nightmares about his dad.
There is nothing open to interpretation about Nate & Cal’s relationship whatsoever.
