There’s a side quest that explains it, you’ll find a girl staring at one of them
But you can just figure it out yourself, the mirror has a location. You’ll find something at each location it shows you. You have to use the illumination spell multiple times to do something to make it work.

There’s a slight learning curve like every video game but nothing too crazy. The tutorials are thorough and it’s easy to get started
