It's not unheard of for a single to blow up weeks or even months after release. Blinding Lights went like #50 in its first 2 weeks and later became the biggest #1 hit ever.

BL success was an anomaly.
It was initially blocked by Mariah during Christmas season, there isn’t a factor like that this time around.
It benefited from dropping before a global pandemic, it’s no coincidence the only other memorable hit that year was Life Is Good. Which also dropped before the pandemic.
It’s crazy to think Weeknd would have a late bloomer this time around.
