Is Golden Gai overrated?
Idk about overrated cuz it does have cool architecture and all but it’s definitely a spot that tourists have latched onto and prices are high because of that. Roppongi is more popular with locals afaik
Also make sure you find a batting cage, a bunch of them are open really late and it’s fun to go when you’re drunk. I think the one in Shinjuku is open until 4AM if I’m not mistaken
Oh no Osaka is definitely on the books for sure. But I hear a lot of these tourists spots be mad packed too so I’m trying to see if there’s other lowkey spots tbh.
i went last year. Osaka is great for 2 days max id say, 1 day for osaka just eating food and osaka castle, second day for nara
If you go to Osaka, check out Wagyu Itaden, thank me later
I highly suggest Kyoto too, loved it cause it’s so much cleaner, and architecture is better, lots of temples and bamboo forest.
Im Literally sitting on the tarmac about to leave for Nihon for ten days myself. Heading north after tokyo to hokkaido sapporo and some snow festivals. Gonna take an overnight ferry to get from island to island.
Oh s*** plane finally moving after sitting here for an hour
Skytree was cool to look over the city. And they have amazing ice cream
Hope you're bringing some spending money because there is an absolute s*** ton of malls. There's malls in every train station lol.
There's so much I cant list it all, I think teamlabs was really fun.
The official SEGA arcade was awesome@
Check out the life-size Gundam too
Hope they love us black folks out there lol
If you don’t have luck with dating apps you can always go to the red light districts. There’s a lot more foreigner friendly brothels now days. Just be careful not to go with the African touts on the street who offer Japanese escorts to you bc they will d*** and scam you.
If I went to Japan, I would go to Kyoto to where yung lean made his music video on the stairs
real
Manhattan Records
Cat St in Harajuku for amazing thrifts/vintage stores
Tower Records
Disc Union
Round 1
Afuri Ramen (best ramen I’ve had, went twice on my last visit)
Ahikabara is an anime town in Tokyo
Senso Ji Temple
Parco is the illest mall I’ve ever been to
Koenji was dope
Eat all you can eat Wagyu. Pick a spot, shouldn’t be more than $30 US
Golden Gai in Shinjuku
Tokyo is amazing. Pick a direction and walk, you’ll have the time of your life.
Where you staying?
Ok this Japan
Gonna be in Tokyo for 10 days next week. Does anyone have any recommendations for music shops/thrift stores/anime merch or any other dope things to do while I’m out there? I know of the One Piece Base Shop as I’m looking forward to visiting it.
Go to the British hub by the shibuya crossing, you’ll meet a lot of people there and make some friends
Besides all the recommendations youve already gotten, id add:
For food, try the harajuku gyozaro, they make amazing japanese dumplings. Also look out for sushi spots close to nakamise dori (sensoji temple), i went to this spot called Hinatomaru Kaminarimon Yanagi Koji, there was a melonpan spot just in front of it too which was also delicious. I'll also throw It out there although its very hard to get a reservation - nakiryu is one of the best ramen spots in the city, but you have to be posted up like very early in the morning before they open to get your reservation (i wasnt able to for example...). Also of course try out the omoide yokocho street, that was unironically a highlight of my trip despite appearances lol. And also ame yokocho in ueno, one of my favorite places in Tokyo and its mainly just izakaya and bars, but the atmosphere was great. Also cafè de l'ambre if you want to try some good coffee. I was supposed to go there but they were closed for like a week+ for new years😭
for nerd s***, nakano broadway is underrated. Theres mostly used products, but you'll find some of the rarest items there, and it covers a great amount of diverse niche. Also a ton of retro toys, its a vibe. Also lots of places to eat nearby. In general look out for mandarake, the one in shibuya for example is pretty cool.
Also the mall where the irl Gundam is has a lot of dope shops (like the gundam base obviously). For gaming, the best place by far is GEO. I bought some used games there for pennies, and they're generally in fantastic conditions (there are also new games ofc)
for thrifting, harajuku is where you'll find all the mainly non luxury fashion s*** (with exceptions). Thats where a lot of thrift shops are, but they'll probably have higher prices cause harajuku is FULL of tourists. I admittedly didnt spend a lot of time thrifting so other than this i don't got much else to share, but Tokyo should be full of those everywhere (there is a 2nd street in ikebukuro for example but i didnt check prices so idk if id recommend!)
if you manage to have a free day while youre in Tokyo, a trip to kamakura and enoshima for me is a must. A highlight of my trip, one of my favorite places in the world i liked it that much (although my love for some anime/manga that take place there might play a part). Its roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes from shibuya, but its 100% worth it, suica covers that trip too.
some other spots in Tokyo to consider: Tokyo Metropolitan government building, you can go to the roof of one of the towers for free and get a view of Tokyo from high up , but you gotta look up timeslots; dont underestimate paid gardens around the city - i went to the shinjuku main garden and one in ginza, they were so cozy, well kept and pretty, even on winter, worth a shot; shinjuku beams, a very cool japanese chain that sells a whole bunch of stuff, mixing modernity and tradition; i suggest only visiting 1/2 maximum don quijote - they're a huge time sink, and they all share like 99% products. I went to the ueno donki, went to one in ginza and never wanted to enter one again lol. In general don't sleep on ueno, i ended up loving It so much despite not being high up in my hype list.
when i went there was this thrift i saw everywhere called grizzleys i think? had pretty good selection of clothes
In general i'd say that a key part of enjoying the trip a lot more is try and go to eating spots where there wont be many tourists, if at all. I made it a rule to go where i only saw japanese clients, and while i did face my fair share of racism (and im a white european too, so i Imagine as a black person It could be even worse), but if you find a welcoming place its quite the atmosphere, you really get to be a part of a slice of life of a japanese person.
I for example went to a okonomiyaki spot in kamakura hidden in a secondary street, there was only a family of 4 and 2 elders chatting with the owner and her daughter. Was kinda intimidated at first but finally entered and i found out it was actually a quite welcoming place, the other clients would greet us and the owner even chatted with us. On the opposite end we went to a izakaya in shibuya quite close to the crossing and were relegated to the s***tiest spot in a corner and serving was slow af lol (of course we were the only tourists in there)
Someone told me there’s mad Nigerians out there doing scamming s***, is that true? (Not tryna be prejudiced btw)
They got a section of Shinjuku that does have a bunch of foreigners and Japanese people trying to scam
