today on my channel I looked at what's been going on with these incomplete vinyl shipping out to fans
lil wayne, the weeknd, beyonce, nicki minaj are all guilty of this to some degree in the past year or two
Tha Carter VI vinyl has SIX out of 19 of the original tracklist songs on it
in the video I go through the history of Billboard sales tracking to frame why it is that artists are motivated to do this
but the question I have for y'all is - how do we stop this from happening in the future?
my solution would be to change the billboard counting rules—if the vinyl you ship has less than, let's say, 80% of the final tracklist, it shouldn't count as a sale. what do y'all think
fraction of the album? count it as a fraction of a sale
Maybe but I think it should be a more dramatic punishment. should count for absolutely nothing imo
it's basically a piece of fan merch like a poster if it's not the whole album. when you sell fans a poster you don't get an album sale. should be the same s***

Idk, that sounds extreme but then again so is 6/19 tracks

Yeah man extreme rip offs should yield extreme results. it's not like anyone is dying if an album sale isn't counted
I’d say if you bought the Carter 6 vinyl, you should probably reevaluate your life.
But I preordered Uy Scuti (mainly because it was under 15 dollars)
That's what you get for pre-ordering an album tbh
Makes no sense in the streaming era. Just wait for it to drop first, confirm it's actually a good album, wait for other people to report on the quality of the vinyl pressing, THEN buy it. It's not like any of these mainstream releases are going to go out of stock. They sit in record stores for years.
How do so many people have the disposable income to pre-order all these new releases anyway? I feel guilty buying any record I think is less than an 8/10
how do we stop this?
dont buy them lol

fomo and perceived loyalty to the artist
casual fans are not pre-ordering vinyls lol

Lmfaoo yea buying that vinyl in the first place is crazy but still

definitely but I’m not gonna put the blame on the consumer, especially when they don’t say it’s not gonna have the whole album on it. it’s super misleading. someone gotta call out the artists and the labels here

I think there's a lot to be said in general here about the devaluing of music.
With these first pressing runs we're basically saying that an unfinished (nearly useless because it's not the definitive album) physical object has more value than the music itself that's supposed to be on the record.
it's a very dangerous precedent we're setting, artist's are willfully devaluing their own art form for short term benefit.
Not sure what the solution except that we're at the precipice of actual cultural decline and we need to take it seriously.
its probably impossible to stop until the industry runs through us like cheap w****s that we are. eventually there will be less demand and the thing will die down. at that time billboard will change its rules again and wont count it in their fw numbers. i guess just dont buy anything at preorder unless its from a musician youre sure of
1. it has to be very clear that the 1P version is NOT the full album when you buy it
2. there should always be exclusive bonus tracks on them to make it worth it to buy at all
3. actual pressings should come within a few weeks, or at least preorders for them
4. the price needs to reflect that you’re only paying for 1LP, not the full 2-3LP album
Unless there’s some BS fine print when you buy those albums, I’d prob try to sue for something this stupid, how do you send out a vinyl with only 1/3 of the tracks. Sounds illegal and idek how it could be profitable for the artist

Agreed 1000%
