Bout to start this
Excited for you man. This game got me through the main chunk of quarantine.
I think the combat is pretty solid and quite fun but at the same time there are many ways it can be improved and I hope to see them in part 2.
Wish list for improvements would be to improve combat in the air because getting up in the air can be frustrating asf since you have no mobility in the air, getting staggered in the air is just not fun.
Other improvements would be to just give me i-frames with dodges because it just makes sense; the decision for enemies to prioritise only the character the player is controlling is weird asf to me too, that needs to go.
Other than that I really love the combat in this s***, the way they implemented the ATB system in this is hard asf to me, I fw it heavy
Yeah it’s not bad, but getting the dodging right is very important imo. I don’t see how you can avoid damage in this game especially since even blocking does some damage to you. Agree with the game needing to improve air game, it’s not fun fighting an enemy in the sky and you can only hit it 3 times before you’re on the ground again.

I’ll keep yall updated with my thoughts about the game

Literally impossible to avoid damage, you HAVE to block. Think of the combat as having to reduce damage instead of avoiding it, you also get materia later on which boosts your ATB depending on how much damage you receive while blocking which makes dodging even more pointless.
Blocking stops you from getting staggered from most attacks too, unlike dodging since you get no iframes.
Only time you should dodge is when you are already clear from enemy attacks and you want even more space, but then again, with the way enemy AI works its better to just swap characters

I’m playing the original FF7 now and I feel like the air combat in remake is like that on purpose. It’s harder to hit opps in the air unless you’re a long range character like barret or using materia

So you think they made that s*** trash on purpose?

Yes fool switch to barret or use materia

Barret isn't always in the party bro. Lot of flying enemies were weak to ice and the ice materia was pretty trash due to the delay, you would use it and enemies would just fly away.
Game would just play a lot better if they gave you more mobility in the air. We not gonna pretend like Cloud is unable to move or defend himself in the air
I’m just mashing at this point
You do that alot with a few mixes in there.

Honestly remake is my first exposure to cloud, like I said I’m playing the original now
Maybe I’m rationalizing bad design but it just makes sense to me that you have different characters that accomplish different things. I don’t understand how cloud is supposed to handle air characters like you’d prefer, he struck me as a pretty grounded character
Edit: unless you drastically changed the gameplay to something like bayonetta/nier

Cloud actually agile asf

Obviously it aint gonna seem that way when you playing a turn based game.
The problem with your argument is that Barret isn't always in the party, I don't think he is in the majority of the game actually and you still face a lot of flying enemies. Once you get up in the air you literally only 2 possible outcomes. You attack the enemy or you get hit, get staggered and fall to the ground.
You're supposed to dodge magic and parry/counter physical abilities
Can block majority of magic attacks too. Hell House fight, when it gets up in the air and starts shooting s*** i feel like blocking is way safer than trying to run and praying you actually dodge.
The ATB block materia s*** was too broken to make use of dodging
Bro, everything about this was lit why couldn’t they hire platinum to do the combat. Very dumb decision to lock hard mode to the 2nd playthrough. S*** is way too easy rn

even at the sephiroth fight, the mf is slicing through train cars and s\*\*\*, in air

Not exactly. When you're hit with Blizzara or Aeroga for example you're supposed to block the initial impact, then roll out of the way before it detonates. Likewise, you'll be taking too much damage if you try to block everything, especially on hard mode where MP management is important and you'll want to be taking as little damage as possible.

Oh yeah you right, I actually did dodge in those situations but I feel like the situations where you actually want to dodge is still very small compared to the amount of times you would want to block instead.
On hard mode because I was gaining so much ATB with the ATB block materia I abused the f*** out of Chakra and Prayer Materia to recover health. Aeriths Soul Drain was actually really good to manage mp too so I always had regen on everyone
Finally out of the reactor and met Aerith, she’s bad asf
yeah, the remake made me really appreciate her as a character. they do a really good job with giving her a personality in the remake.

I forgot I had Soul Drain until like 60% of the way through my run so bosses were hell up to that point.
I definitely want Hard Mode to be available from the beginning next time since that's the most engaging way to play imo. The Shinra challenges were by far my favorite battles in the game
