That makes me think we should really get a Final Fantasy thread for discussion on the various games of the series

Idk if anybody would be interested, Tell me if you are tho

Im def interested! And i know @rise_zero will be as well haha

Surprised there isn't one already. Thought about that when the Dragon Quest series thread was made recently

Yeah im sure there's a lot of folks out there who played like 10-15 hours of the total ~80ish available in the OG cause they played it when they were really young and never went back to beat it, but still get hyped whenever FF7 is mentioned cause it's just that famous.

Hell, i'm sure there's a good chunk of people who never played the OG at all who get hyped about anything FF7-related because of its reputation alone haha

Its kind of a shame tbh because while the Midgar part is the most memorable start you could ask for the rest of the game is being totally underrated when it has some really great moments too

You dont gotta make the OP all fancy right away. You can always just make the thread and say "discuss" and fix it up later

FF7 isnt even in my top 3 or 5 FF gams, but its one of the rare ones in the series for me where the later sections of the game are more noteworthy than the first parts — and in that game specifically, the whole post-Midgar bulk of the game could qualify under that label haha

Even my favorites tend to fall off towards the end, like FF9's final disc isn't nearly on par with the greatness of the 3 discs before it.

Yeah FF9 gets a bit convoluted towards the end but that final dungeon and the ending are pretty great imo

Am I the only one that thinks the Midgar portion is objectively the worse part in the game?

Well its the beginning so the gameplay is objectively simple and easy but the atmosphere/soundtrack makes it one of the most fun parts of the game for me

I love the beginning don’t get me wrong, but the game became solidified best game I had ever played once it got to the latter half of disc 1, and especially all of disc 2.

The game doesnt have many weak points tbh. It's still fresh in my head cause I replayed it this January. I think the s*** in the blizzard/snowy mountains at the start of disc 2 is the only part I didnt think was fun.

Yeah even the moments in the game that you could consider weak are still better than most other game’s strongest moments.

And yeah the first half of the snow area is a little bleh but the ice mountain is one of my favorite parts of the game.

All in all Disc 2 is where it gets “out there” and experimental story-wise and i’m a sucker for that stuff.

I wouldnt say worse tbh its really action packed and it always keeps you on the move, I think it serves its purpose briliantly but tbh when the game finally opens up it gets 10 times better so yeah I agree with you to an extent

  • May 11, 2020

Only thing weak about OG I would say are the minigames because the controls are kinda messy but they at least offer some variation so even the weaker parts arent even that weak lol

    Such an amazing game

What’s everyone’s favorite moments in the OG?

For me, the best moment hands down and it’s not even close is Cosmo Canyon 1st visit. Every moment of it.

After that, all these are tied:

    Kalm (Cloud/Sephiroth backstory)
    Mount Corel 1st visit
    Temple of the ancients
    Gaea’s Cliff
    Junon Disc 2
Mideel 2nd visit (Cloud Tifa Lifestream)
    Return to Midgar

I love the whole journey to nothern crater on the snowy continent at the end of disc 1, culminating with the weapons awakening

Then Junons escape is just wow

Yes! That’s actually all disc 2 but yeah that whole ice mountain->northern crater->Junon escape is probably my favorite stretch of events in the game and is a big reason why I love disc 2 so much.
