Turn based would be bad for business unfortunately. It’s easy for us to say this as fans, but much more harder when you’re running an operation and are forced by higher ups to keep numbers in mind or else your project gets scrapped.

S***ty, I know. I would MUCH rather have had turn based myself.

I don't think turn-based would necessarily be "bad for business" as much as it just isn't on brand for what they've been doing with the franchise for the past decade.

I mean, the commercial success of DQXI proves modern turn-based entries in a long-running JRPG franchise is still highly profitable: DQ sold over 2 million copies in Japan in its first 2 days, while FF7R took a 3 days to sell over 1 mil there.

Traditional turn-based combat just hasn't been the direction of FF game design since FF12, and the Remake's combat is a continuation of things established in FF13 and the Dissidia series. (Not to mention the influence of KH on menuing layout). Outside of the classic ATB gauge thats been around for many years, they probably wouldn't have been able to implement a true traditional turn-based model that feels natural compared to the rest of the game's design. I'm sure that's a big reason why they still put in the "Classic Mode" option — to give traditional players the closest thing possible to the standard turn-based system that doesn't contradict the overall feeling of the modernized design

Wow, respect to these guys but they sound like nothing but over-imaginative pussies.

They need to shut up, sit down, and just stick to the basics and rewrite the game. Really, it’s not hard. It’s like they each desperately have something to prove.

And that was the root of all issues with the first installment of Remake. It was trying so hard to prove that it was cool, that it totally forgot that we already loved it for what it was.

One of the major leads behind the original game saying that they don't even remember the basic structure and plot threads of the post-Midgar section — AKA, literally 75% of the OG's runtime — and that they're gonna watch f***ing lets plays on YouTube or some s*** to refresh their memory........

Definitely NOT what I'm trying to hear from the folks working on the next installment

That's what's so ridiculous to me...they're talking about the most famous FF game of all time, literally the game that broke the series out of the niche market in the 16-bit era and crossed-over into being a household name.

The OG's ubiquitous fame is literally why they decided to do a huge remake for this specific entry.

And they're sitting here talking about "shit, uhhh, what happens after the first few hours of the original again?"

You'd think replaying the original would have been one of the first things they did when they began working on this project

What if the whispers were literally put in the game by a small group of developers who were familiar with the OG game, and their whole job was dedicated to fixing any mistakes made by the directors cause they didn't remember how the story was supposed to go?

That'd be a lot cooler than Tetsuya Nomura just being a pretentious a****** with too much power

The dude is so out of touch with what makes a story good. I guess that's what happens when you're surrounded by yes men telling you every s***ty idea you have is genius. Watch f***ing Sora and Goofy pop up in the next part.

Dont get me wrong Im happy overall with the way the first part turned out, but I dont understand why they cant just stick to the damn script.

I swear i had been completely fine with them retconning the original FF7 lore and was honestly excited to see what was coming next because i felt like post-Midgar content would be kinda difficult to actually f*** up cause its so huge... But that interview excerpt is the first thing ive seen that's made me go "awwwwww s*** it could actually take a wrong turn" lol

Alternate timelines and the Whisperers and all that s*** aside, the only major problem I had was how they handled Sephiroth. He went from a mysterious deadly villain with awesome build up to a dweeby boogieman that just wouldn't go away. I was sick of him by the end of it lol

Dunkey put it perfectly "Sephiroth shows up every f***ing hour because he has no life"

Yeah im sure there's a lot of folks out there who played like 10-15 hours of the total ~80ish available in the OG cause they played it when they were really young and never went back to beat it, but still get hyped whenever FF7 is mentioned cause it's just that famous.

Hell, i'm sure there's a good chunk of people who never played the OG at all who get hyped about anything FF7-related because of its reputation alone haha

That makes me think we should really get a Final Fantasy thread for discussion on the various games of the series
