Listened the entire 6 hour complete Basement Tapes yesterday at work and there are quite a few rambling jams that sound exactly like Tom in the 80s and 90s and biblical bangers that fathered Nick's style.

However, if any album was Tom Waits before Tom Waits it's Beefheart's Lick My Decals Off, Baby. Wouldn't say Waits ripped that off but the similarities are pretty obvious.

Yeah there are lots of Tom songs where he sounds exactly like Beefheart when he's in buzzsaw vocal mode. Seems like they're equally influential to Tom and probably like the only white dudes on his list. Hear alot of Wolf in him.
