    I feel like it's the opposite for me. mainly because the production values for cinema hit staggering levels of quality and tapped into levels of high art in the 20's whereas any music from before the mid 50s sounds incredibly dusty and archaic to me.

    Took non-classical music like 30-40 years to catch up with the production values and artfulness of peak cinema.

    well maybe youd feel differently upon fully taking that pre-50s jazz pill

    but yeah recording quality is the biggest hurdle in general even for the most sophisticated masters like Ellington

    Man I been on a huge Peewee binge the last couple weeks, dude was really doing laps around these trap rappers with charisma, wordplay and that bounce flow. I guess still being in the streets was why he didn’t blow up more.

    Amazing album covers too

    I will someday

    You should do Seventh Seal sooner than later. That and La Strada were the Pandora's Box into European art films for the entire New Hollywood generation of directors that ran the 70s. It's got a grim reputation but has alot of beauty and comedy as well. Probably in my top ten.

    The Sunset Violent is prob the album that grew on me the most throughout the year. I enjoyed it first listen but now it’s top 20.

    It's crazy that they started out making some off kilter dubstep stuff then just turned into a really tight band

    have you ever had issue with playback? From my research, that seems to be the biggest quarrel people have

    Not sure. I know Criterion used to have the worst playback/codec in the world, but it seems like it's gotten a lot better (It used to go by a different name that I can no longer remember)

    no they're more like The Quietus or something. they been doing poll that the industry votes on for "Top 100 films of all time" list once per decade since 1952... Citizen Kane was at the top every year for like 50 years... then Vertigo for a few decades.... and now its Jeanne Dielman which is a great film but its also the slowest 200 minute French film you could possibly imagine. probably inaccessibly slow to about 98 percent of filmgoers.. but hey its a woman at the top finally

    say what you will about Chinatown but Portrait is not better then every film made by;

    Brian De Palma, Michael Mann, Werner Herzog, John Huston, Wim Wenders, Howard Hawks, Robert Altman etc....

    I get the film industry was extremely geared toward male filmmakers which was unfair but still feel like they overcompensated to a crazy degree.

    none of this really matters but it did skew my expectations for Portrait. I expected a life changing masterpiece but was mostly bored.

    I love Jeanne Dielman and Akerman but the idea of it being the #1 film of all time is ludicrous.

    Perfect From Now On has been my favorite album ever for probably 8-9 years straight... but I think an old favorite is re-taking the #1 spot, and the only record I could conceivably give a personal 10/10 after realizing how every song is pretty much an all time great

  • Not Pandora's box btw

    Ill admit i went into it with a bad attitude after Sight & Sound bounced a bunch of all time masterpieces off the list to jack Portrait up to the 30th best film of all time

    I feel like it takes years for a film to settle into its place in the cannon and it feels very ridiculous to slap a 2019 movie over all of these;

    definitely just felt like it got there because its queer coded and directed by a woman and they didnt want to look so old, male and white (which I get but where's Elaine May who is actually great).

    my gf was accusing me of being a chauvinist for thinking this before we hit play and went it was over she was like

    "yeah that was good but definitely not touching all those classics that got bounced off the list"
