I stopped playing video games 10 years ago but want to try out that dark souls game some day
watched some long video about the existential philosophy of it and seemed pretty interesting. i'm an insufferable snob about this stuff but trying to be proved wrong and find a video game that really serves as true artistic expression and not just a form of entertainment. I'm sure there are plenty of games like this but i really wouldn't know since i don't play them!
Play Hollow Knight

Bioshock 2 really does just suck

never played the bioshock games except for the beginning of the first one but that was really cool. Also the bioshock infinite game looked really beautiful

The setting and atmosphere is immaculate. Every gripe I have is entirely with gameplay.
A game can be as immersive and story driven as you want but if the core gameplay mechanics are highly flawed I don't think that's a good game. Atmosphere and story should be an additive, not the selling point
(although the games set design is a major point of importance, I just think gameplay should be #1) that's why s*** like Odyssey it's so damn good. Story is typical Mario s***, but the gameplay and level design+controls is incredible
The interactivity is often counter productive because it mainly attracts mechanically minded people. It can be usually reduced to a series of systems. It uses the facade of other art forms. Art is meant to be taken in rather than something you actively tinker with.
Art can absolutely be 'tinkered with' as art itself is already inherently 'tinkering' around with s*** to make it.
its the only medium that can do what all the others ones do and then some
Was watching a Cronenberg interview last night during his insane press conference at Cannes for Crash. He said that in his opinion art is not interactive. But I have heard stories that he can be really full of himself as an "artist".
For example:

I already explained that I thought the controls were clunky and the puzzles were repetitive, but ok. Also you replied to me saying you think art doesn't age, and in this case, I think it clearly has
Also the abilities and weapon wheel is a tad annoying to deal with
Art objectively doesn’t age. It’s a fundamentally dumb framework to apply to something. It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not an opinion. The art didn’t age. You have aged by acquiring a new set of standards that you’re retroactively applying. That’s an option on your part.

No the artist is meant to tinker, not the person taking in the art. Also if you just reduce games to a set of mechanics then it’s just a car at best or a toy at worst.
It’s also funny to use Mario Odyssey as an example of “gameplay is king” because the refreshing thing about that game was the way it switches things up from the typical Mario format and contextualized the adventure in a new way. If it was just a bunch of grey levels with no interesting art direction or context for why you’re there—then no matter how well designed the platforming was…it would suck.
yall know how I feel about tv and feel film is the superior art form (i'm also maybe a pretentious hyprocrite about this since I barely even watch tv as well) but i feel like video games have a higher potential than TV to really transcend the spectacle/form of the medium itself
thoughts on puzzles ? Sometimes I think about setting out to conquer one of those 3000 piece behemoths. I’m sure it’s rewarding in its own right.

In my view art CAN be interactive but the interactivity more often than not takes away from what art fundamentally is—which is human expression filtered through an abstraction.

I used to love puzzles as a kid. Me and my brother would spend hours and hours putting them together.
You ran away from Souls games cause you couldnt deal with failure
Failure is how you grow, Fidelio

I’m not shunning games. I respect them. I’m just saying personally they’re not my favorite medium, but also it’s just not accurate to suggest games will ever be viewed as art on the level of films, because the majority of people don’t have the time to engage with a single game for 40+ hours to get the full experience. Stuff like the Team Ico trilogy gets close to transcending the limits of what it is, but it’s an obvious hill that needs to be climbed. Games are honestly closer to architecture than they are film.
I don't think a game has to be artsy fartsy like Ico to be art. It is a fine line but as long as it's branched out beyond the most basic puzzle or shooter or whatever aspect to be able to convey a cumulative something then it counts. Even basic Metroid and Zelda back on Super Nintendo were able to tap into him people's imaginations and get them as entranced as a Miyazaki or Ridley Scott film.

If i was going to recommend one game for you to dive back into blindly after 10 years. It would be subnautica. Not too huge or overwhelming and will have you in awe.

My mother in law has a 2000 piece puzzle out at all time
I don't see the appeal

My grandparents would put them together, glue them, then put them on the wall in a frame
They seem interesting but idk I feel like I’d get bored halfway through.

I agree with this
