I still don't know what actual "emo" is as a genre
I thought Elliott Smith qualified but apparently not
there’s a split between people who think emo music is just emotional music, and then there’s people who go by the conventions of the genre of midwestern emo which is the mid tempo rock tracks with twinkly guitars, scrappy/yelled vocals, and weird/quirky song titles. neither is wrong, just different perceptions.
this track is pretty much the definition of midwestern emo

He’s a great melody writer, I just rarely connected with the form they take in execution. I like 90’s emo, but their almost hyper exaggerated take on it rubs me the wrong way. Their most famous song would be gorgeous in someone else’s hands.The opening piano melody is like the song of life from Final Fantasy 9 and I adore that piece of music. A track like Cancer I want to love, but it sounds like it should be an Antlers style song instead and not just cause of the subject matter.

NoirJamming Queens of the Stone Age today because of the new album which I hadn't heard
In Times New Roman is mostly just fine, solid songwriting and production, not their most interesting work but Carnavoyeur and Emotion Sickness are awesome and carry the album. The personal angle of the lyricism helps a lot.
Era Vulgaris is an interesting one. Hadn't heard it ages but I've had Make It Wit Chu (for karaoke) and 3's & 7's in rotation lately so I wanted to run it back. Total mess of an album, but the high moments are f***ing great and the overall sound/approach is very cool and unique. I feel like 70% of the album is just them being as obnoxious as possible until the melodic chorus comes in but then there's gems like this:
