yeah it took me a few years to really get into it tbh. still a few annoyings moments that grate on even me.

best parts for me are his catchiest melodies ever on some of those tracks, especially Let's Make the Water Turn Black, Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance, Mom & Dad. Side B is better than side A tbh

this super early 1961 instrumental Take Your Clothes Off.. really brings out the jazz aspect and how great the melody is

You got me wanting to listen to it now.

I listened about 3/4 through while doing list stuff last night. I can only compare it to Rumours since I haven't heard any of the early stuff

a guide to the early stuff

probably in the top handful of bands on earth by 1969

i can see you either liking it or disliking it tbh. and those melodies i were talking about didnt exactly jump out at me at first. and its still zappa so its not exactly straightforward or pop and there are some sound collage parts

Zappa lowkey one of the best melodic geniuses oat. Freak Out! will almost make my top 10 just cause every song, no matter how tongue in cheek or not, is so f***ing catchy. (Then there's the closing track).

dude i know you like Any Way The Wind Blows but what the f*** are you talking about

my biggest gripe with zappa is that he couldn't write an actual sincere and beautiful melody to save his life (AWTWB being as close as he got)

Ray Davies is what you call a melodic genius cause he could write soul shattering melodies like this in his sleep

Oh of course I don’t expect straightforward pop. I’m familiar with Zappa’s work, just never got around to that one.

how can a melody be sincere?

Peaches en Regalia is a total melodic masterpiece btw. would call him compositional genius instead of just melodic genius tho since its not just music based around the main melody some of the other goats (like Ray)

cant appreciate the clear melodic mastery in stuff like this?

i wonder how many other people on earth besides me uphold it is as their best release ever

if you remove the Jeremy Spencer led slide guitar fests (still alright but theyre all basically the same and get old quick) its a 10/10

the British allmans and their (occasional) level of improv reached a certain level a lot of the british bands didnt compared to american counterparts tbh

I know what he means. He means emotionally sincere. Like someone can write a pleasant melody but the feeling of it in practice can make it come across weaker or less affecting. But not all melodic music needs to be beautiful in the traditional sense.

What the f*** are you talking about? Did I say anything about his sincerity? Regardless of whether it was sincere or satire, he showed true genius in creating melodies on Freak Out! and Absolutely Free and continued showing glimpses for most of the 60s

he still has some of the emotional "sincere" melodies if thats what youd want to call it but its more in the form of his gutiar soloing, like Watermelon in Easter Hay a clear peak of his emotional expression

he just wasnt really a ballad writer like that. and i think the prettier melodies he did are usually more in a jazz sense so i guess its not the same type of thing you guys mean. still just dont like the word sincerity because the actual feeling behind his composition was about as sincere/passionate as you can get

we must be talking about something else when we say melodic genius cause when i think melodic genius i think Paul McCartney and Ray Davies and Neil Young who have written countless moving ballads

and i think of Zappa as the literal antichrist of that particular thing

  • Jul 12, 2022

Zappa trolls a lot but this song is sincere

If you are going to Zappa for emotional sincerity then I think you might be listening to him wrong

I think a good example of what he means would be what I just got to on the album. A song like “What’s The Ugliest Part of Your Body” has a very nice melody but it’s treated like a joke naturally.

yeah a Zappa ballad not exactly what you would go to him for. not counting jazz ballads which he did but i dont think youre including that in what youre thinking about

Zappa did tons of different things but lyrical ballads not his style, i think he got those emotions out with the guitar soloing and occasional instrumental stuff, and obviously he was never one to let someone write lyrics for him like that
