Just be thankful you didnt do an interview on national television to advocate the anti-work movement and say you wanna work less hours at your current job as a self-employed dog walker

Well i was technically unemployed for like the first 3-4 years of diving into film too haha, and definitely slowed wayyyy down after getting a proper job. Then over the past year or so all the constant moving and stress that came with it burnt me out and i was never in the mood to watch any films, and was playing a lot more games or just watching YouTube in my free time — which are the two "turn my brain off" things i enjoy the most, even though they can sometimes easily takeover way more of my time than I'd like.

But if you want the overly long, character breakdown explanation...

I've always been the kind of person who discovers a general subject I like and then puts 200% of my focus into it for years until i feel satisfied, or until something else comes along that grabs my interest enough to steal the spotlignt. My grandpa always talks about how i was like that as a kid, where I would find something i really liked and i would spend all my time and breathe learning/talking about it, and then moving on when I found something else to take its place. But i never really recognized that about myself until college when i got into literature, and then later music.

And then when i got into film (including reading about film), that took over music's role in my life. I mean those first few years i was watching 500-600 films a year on average, on top of constantly finding and reading books about film history, criticism, and directors. (And having tons of free time and an extremely abnormal sleeping schedule are definitely contributing factors.)

That's also why since like 2016 i have barely kept up with new music each year the way i used to, outside of like the same 5 or 6 current artists i really love. It's crazy going to the OG KTT and seeing those "best albums of 2015" type threads and how many albums from each year i listened to. Ii cant even name 10 albums that dropped last year off the top of my head

I'm only able to actually learn and retain information when I dedicate myself to one, maybe two primary things at a time (mostly just one tho). And i'm also able to learn bits and pieces about other subjects from these primary things, like how i learned about criticism/theory and philosophy from literature, which translated seamlessly when i got into music and its history (and my time with literature helped me bettef appreciate albums as a text).

And all those things have carried over just as much into my focus on film, and i've just added more info about those things with each big primary focus. Idk if i've just gotten extremely lucky that all the things i've dedicated my time to over the years contribute value to each other, or if there would naturally be a kind of continually increasing thread of knowledge regardless of what subject I'm into.

I suppose learning about new subjects is like what I do instead of d****/alcohol. It takes over my life without me even realizing it and i cant really resist losing myself in learning as much as i can about something for years at a time.

And this website has also played a big role in that, unexpectedly. Like the past 7-8 years on here, especially since the conception of Fam Thread, have been an invaluable source of community and discussion that has helped me find out new things about whatever topic im diving into. I will never think of the time i've spent shooting the s*** with you guys in here as wasted because of that. I really have no shame in saying that you guys in here have genuinely become my really good friends.

I've always told my husband that if money wasn't such a factor in our lives, then I would probably just want to enroll in different graduate programs for the rest of my life, spending 4-6 years at a time learning everything about one subject at a time. I wouldn't even do anything with my degrees like find a great job with what i've learned (again, if money wasn't a factor). I'd be perfectly content just learning new stuff.

Ok but tbf I think a lot of people would happily learn new subjects and do nothing with it if money wasn't an issue lol.

Why not. The way you described it was essentially disposable wealth. There's probably lots of rich f***s with a bachelors, a masters, a masters masters, a doctorate... and don't do anything with them

I would definitely do another degree if I could sack off work and money was no object. Doing assignments wouldn't bother me if nothing was riding on my grade.

Learning through reading/watching on my own time, absolutely. But going back to class? F*** no.

Half this site are like activists now. Every thread lately is like something related to that or like sales.
