• the singles gave him the feeling that Crash was going to be a send-up of 80s music (???)

• he thinks Crash "marks a departure from the Vroom Vroom/Pop 2 Charli era" which he prefers (as if her self-titled and Number 1 Angel aren't littered with bunch of more traditional/trendy sounding pop jams)

• goes on a tangent about Charli "desires to release an album that does very well commercially" — and he says "good ones and beg for you have done huge numbers, but not 3 or 4 times her previous singles" (this is supposed to be a criticism, somehow — also no mention of Crash being her last contractual album which means the label is going to market the s*** out of it to shoot for the most commercial success as possible)

• says two of the songs on the album are rip offs of famous New Order singles

• charli tries and fails to make rihanna-esque music

• says New Shapes chorus is unpleasant to listen, and that the title track is headache inducing (and the closing guitar solo is "truly awful"

• thinks is among her worst work lyrically

• "Charli and her producers toss on loads of kooky synthesizers and sound effects. And toward the end we get all of these weird beat switch-ups and vocal manipulations that sounds like a mess compared to her use of those elements in previous albums" (????)

• Constant Repeat and Move Me were more of what he was expecting from her but "aren't as fun or exciting" as her older stuff

• when describing Used to Know Me: "the whole thing sounds the way I think ill-fitting vintage clothing looks" (3 million subscribers)

• favorite songs are Baby, Every Rule, and Yuck — the rest of album is forgettable and hasn't stuck with him at all

That’s not what I’m saying. It was just so refreshing to see something made by someone who clearly loves the genre and doesn’t think he’s above it. In a sea of self serious Rosemary’s Baby wannabes you had something actually embrace the core of what horror always was.

I'm glad you enjoyed it I saw through it. Putting young people in old people make up is not the only thing that completely pulled me out of the experience.

I think it's funny you were saying Marvel fans are the most defensive on Earth the other day but I've lost track of how many times you've said you never want to talk to me about movies again because I don't like the odd horror movie :elon:

Because you s*** on the rare things that come out that actually manage to connect with my sensibilities. It’s not comparable to Marvel which is the dominate cultural force in film.

I feel like there’s a disconnect between what the film is actually going for and what you guys are thinking you’re supposed to be getting out of it. It’s meant to be obvious in certain points. Despite it not being above the material it’s not completely unaware. There’s a bit of tongue and cheek-ness to the whole thing while still playing it straight. I laughed and rolled my eyes at that choice at first but once the De Palma split screen popped up with the old woman I realized they knew that would be the first reaction and wanted you to let it just wash over you and then I found it deeply affecting. It’s honest and corny but aware just enough of that.

Agreed but it just didn't click for me. I think the one aspect I cherish the most about cinema is the ability to surprise me and if a film can actually make me feel like I don't know what's about to happen and make me feel a little exposed it means everything to me. This didn't even have a hint of that.

That’s fair. It’s definitely predictable to an extent but as someone who likes blunt slasher movies that was totally fine for me. I honestly don’t know why I recommended it to you, I knew it wasn’t your kind of thing. It’s just been getting glowing reviews even from people who normally dislike this stuff so I guess I figured maybe this would be the one to click with you and you’d find it clever or something.
