this is the open minded reaction i was hoping for cant fault you for thinking majority of Hollywood was racist back then, they definitely were. doesn’t mean their s***ty personal views always leaked into their films tho.

take Roman Polanski for example. would you know he was a pedo from watching Rosemary’s Baby? hell na! but would you be doing yourself a disservice by not watching that pedo-directed masterpiece? totally

a little different since racism was and is a much more systemic problem, but i’m sure you get what i’m trying to say

The director of Nosferatu was a big gay and went way out of his way to romanticize a bunch of Polynesians in Tabu when no other filmmakers would even leave Hollywood so I doubt he was a bigot

For sure at the end of the day it’s all about what’s enjoyable these artists work outlive them to be watch by generations so I guess there’s no point to riled up about it consumes things for what they are don’t get to fixated on who’s making it in when it comes to these situations

Yeea that’s really what I’m getting at like some things are just waaay too obvious a lot of those films from America were using racism as comic relief it’s wild so I’d rather just seek to other countries in terms of films from that era

You won't find the slapstick holy trinity of Chaplin, Keaton or Lloyd doing racist s*** only seen blackface once or twice in their films iirc. Keaton definitely cast actual black people.

Sherlock Jr is the first silent film I recommend to anyone.... 45 minutes of rapidly escalating stunts and special effects that will blow your mind trust me it's bonkers.
