I wanted to show it to my dad just because of Hopkins but I don’t even think he can handle the end
You think Bron should go back to Miami?
Not unless his son gets drafted there will he go back
IS ANYONE HERE A MARINE BIOLOGIST!?
“the sea was mighty angry that day, my friends...

they're both clinical psychiatrist/psychotherapists so it's the kind of story they find interesting haha since it deals with mental illness - I knew it would crush my mom though...
i was expecting yet another sad old person movie but the way they made you experience his delusions was pretty original and impressive
and dont watch it, its not fun and we were groaning the whole time. fidelio manages to find enlightening metatextuality in any goddamn trash i swear to god.
yes the way the film disorients you was really effective i thought. my dad kept moaning about how it was an inaccurate portrayal of dementia but in the end even he conceded that it was really powerful and perhaps 100% accuracy wouldn't have been the best way to tell that story anyway
I do think Hopkins deserved the Oscar however. spoiler the part where that dude starts slapping his character in the face and he starts crying
devastating

I know I mentioned this a few pages back but you ever read any Raymond Carver ? Been thinking bout some of the short stories and goddamn this guy can write. Mon could write something complex in layman's term and still have you like

Hopkins gave a top 50 performance ever. I need to see him on stage while he’s alive.

Yes he's one of my favorite short story writers and 'Cathedral' is perhaps the best piece of short fiction I've ever read. It's remarkable that such simple and spare prose can be so powerful but he pulls it off. it's funny because I have a copy of 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love' sitting on the coffee table in front of me. (he also taught at my university way before I went there so I automatically have an affinity for his writing)
Here's a great poem from Carver:
Then Pancho Villa came to town
hanged the mayor
and summoned the old and infirm
Count Vronsky to supper.
Pancho introduced his new girl friend,
along with her husband in his white apron,
then asked the Count to tell him
about his unhappy exile in Mexico.
Later, the talk was of women and horses.
Both were experts.
The girl friend giggled
and fussed with the pearl buttons
on Pancho’s shirt until,
promptly at midnight, Pancho went to sleep
with his head on the table.
The husband crossed himself
and left the house holding his boots
without so much as a sign
to his wife or Vronsky.
That anonymous husband, barefooted,
humiliated, trying to save his life, he
is the hero of this poem.
the twist with the male nurse was powerful
I don't know if I interpreted it as a twist since I thought the whole film wasn't really intended to make sense in the first place but I agree. v powerful indeed

He really did. That nonsense the academy pulled a couple months ago tho...

I finished reading his 'Where Im Calling From' which is basically a compilation so it had some stories from those books.. They really do stick with you, that 'A Small, Good Thing'
Ill nab that 'What We Talk About' in the future and yes it looks good on a coffee table

'A Small Good Thing' has two versions and they're both really great though VASTLY different. The other version is called "The Bath" and it's in the collection I mentioned. Some of his finest work in that one..

What happened?

I call it a twist because if the film is him spending each day remembering how he got to where he presently is, then it shows exactly how the nurse is abusing him through the main character’s confused perspective
@RVI listening to The Grand Wazoo rn, this is incredible
Literally exactly what I wanted from the guy, appreciate the rec
