I have a more lengthy post about just that but I agree, and it extends beyond just rap. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) is simply the first gen since the mass commoditization of music that doesn’t put the aspiration to become a crossover artist on a pedestal

    Definitely not true

Which mainstream rapper has made less than 100k first week? or rather how many haven’t made 100k first week

I am worried about the future of afrobeat and soca now that major label bloodsuckers have their eyes locked on them now.

HOT TAKE: I feel like this decision was partly made because the industry's "Female Rap Takeover/ Attempt to Replace Nicki Minaj" experiment didn't produce the results they had hoped for.

I'm on my full Azealia Banks-Misogynistic bag with this one.

i mean for rap to be pushed back into the forefront they would need hits. and doesnt that mean more generic music.

I think that’s part of it for sure. I think Cardi not dropping is a huge part of why that didn’t work tbh

It did though. Female rap is more successful than it has ever been.

This has zero to do with women in rap.

You think all songs sound the same now, wait till all the Burna Boy and Amapiano clones come out at full swing.

There isn’t some conspiracy to replace Nicki. She still exist and female rap in better than it’s every been in terms of success in the mainstream.

This has nothing to do with that.

It’s the male side of things that aren’t producing the necessary big names.

Machel didn’t sign because they lowballed him. Not because he didn’t want to.

He realized that he was already making the amount of money they wanted to pay him.

you telling me if artists like kendrick and cole - who by the way, made hits would not be signed today?

I don’t think so, those guys actually made consistent bodies of work. With radio play.

Don’t think labels are turning those guys down

Megan Thee Stallion was turned down by several labels solely because she didn't have enough IG followers

All genres have their ups and down

Hip-hop is at its low point rn

    It’ll bounce back

Just gotta go back to the drawing board and come back with something fresh

  • Sonically speaking, rap has barely budged in over 10 years, so it's no wonder. I like the trap sound, but basically only Trab is doing anything interesting with it at this point. It's tired otherwise.

Then of course, the latin dancehall/reggaeton fever (not that Drakewashed dad-hat Toronto dancehall bullshit) is resurging right on the 20 year mark as expected, as the new generation rediscovers it. Can't say I'm mad about it, every time it swings back into favor we get non-stop bops

Yeah it sucks but these mfs on here get off on being the first to try to knock you down a peg if you give any sort of effort, and will get rewarded with first page likes for it. I’m done wasting my energy on that

Jack Harlow just did 35k. Ice Spice just did 20k. Youngboy just did 60k.

It takes careful maneuvering to hit that and dudes fall off all the time. Kodak was buzzing when he did 60k. Is Doja going to crack it?

    Here’s the reason why:

In America, monoculture is dead and as a result, creating a new star or a popping, viable rap act is almost impossible.

However, that is not the case in other cultures and genres like afrobeats, Latin music, etc

They still get behind their prominent acts in a unifying, galvanizing matter. As such, the return on investment is far greater. Artists in those communities have entire sections of countries supporting them. That can’t happen in America anymore because there is no monoculture

This has nothing to do with the quality of music that’s a crazy insinuation. Y’all keep looking at s*** like this through a quality of music lense and it couldn’t be more wrong

edit: That's not to say, hip-hop leaning in to gangsta rap again hasn't played a part, it has...but the inability to create moments and momentum within culture is the far greater culprit here

the longevity of a lot latin artists is insane...you get a real sense of community and love for an artist when they're still pumping out hits that are multigenerational

there is no sense of community in modern American music...gee i wonder why

Not saying it would change hip-hop’s course,

But it would certainly help if guys started making crossover records again like the past era’s stars

Everybody wanna rap about opps and be from the trenches when what worked was records like power trip, work out, hold on we’re going home, IDFWU, my last, swimming pools
