Rock bands are going to come back
We need punk and hard rock
hardcore is in a great place rn and has been
You're saying Drake does things outside of rap like branding and merchandising for his albums to sell?
Where?
He's never been one of these fashion guys prioritizing merch, he doesn't talk crazy in interviews like Kanye for views, the most you could say is that he makes radio friendly music, but it's still about the music
Yeah man
The artistic merits of Toosie Slide
Maybe that’s the wake up call rap needs. Im sure rappers and labels dont even fw the music they push like that but they think they have no alternative
2000s criticism was more about beat choices and subject matters but the personalities were there
So does it just come down to the labels putting in the work for making interesting artists?
Cause beat choices are better and the subject matter is back again to street s*** right now.
I was too young to remember, but where is the dark age era of the 2000's that people on here talk about then?
Is this decade the first time we're having so many boring personalities being pushed?
Watch smack dvd i promise some of the most exciting s*** lmfao
Yall are losing the topic of thread in favor of choosing Kendrick over Drake lol, s***'s a stan war waiting to happen
I liked More Life more then Steppers so idg hoe this applies to me

I think they’d be referring to how dominant gangsta rap was prior to college dropout/Kanye’s run but even as I get older I start to see that Kanye just put a neat mainstream bow on things that dead prez talib mos def and other lesser known people etc were already doing
Guys like Em, 50, Luda, the Dipset/Roc/Lox and the beginnings of the street dvd culture. It wasn’t boring at all IMO
The need to actually be outside around people meant it was necessary to have a semblance of a personality.
Or maybe this is the normal progression/regression of a genre and because hip hop is so young it’s now going through it’s normal evolution.
It kind of is true for other genres
You’re mostly naming acts that have been around for awhile
Other than Morgan, none of those acts are “new”
Where are the new acts from these genres that debuted in say, 2020ish that are doing arenas and selling >200k 1st week
for country, Zach Bryan and Jelly Roll broke through in 2022 and are now playing arenas, Zach Bryan 2022 album is 2x platinum. Bailey Zimmerman is selling well, got into billboard top 10 and looks set for similar trajectory as the youngest/newest of these
Noah Kahan broke through in 2022 and is playing venues of that size, album going to go platinum
Olivia Rodrigo, Steve Lacy other obvious examples
when there are so many exceptions other than just Latin, African, (+Korean) music to the "American monoculture is dead so there can't be new stars" idea, I think you gotta find some other reasons why hip hop isn't making new stars other than just yelling out monoculture over and over again.
maybe you can still make a good point about decentralization making it harder for new stars but we can't just sit here and pretend we are in a dead era

finding interesting artists and going the risky route instead of the safe one
I say this as a big fan that used to hate when niggas brought this up.
Was Kendrick's success/and in a larger picture: the big 3 a product of a weak era?
@FREE @Brave I'm curious to know specifically
Yes of the three of them none I think really had the same star power we usually saw from like a Ye,Wayne or Hov.
Each had a trait that the others lacked and when no other artist came around with all three traits the genre settled

he was seen as the backpack savior in the mainstream lupe failed to become

i don’t think hip hop is that young anymore buddy

lol this is why it was surreal New York couldn’t produce a young Nigga to carry the torch at a time when it was more wide open than ever
Yall are losing the topic of thread in favor of choosing Kendrick over Drake lol, s***'s a stan war waiting to happen
because you’re trying to get on Kendrick for taking a bit to drop music when he puts out generational bodies of work
Drake has been flooding the scene with his music and not too much of it is worth to write home about save a handful of songs here and there
Or maybe this is the normal progression/regression of a genre and because hip hop is so young it’s now going through it’s normal evolution.
This isn’t normal tbh. Like “hiphop is dead” has never been a crossover conversation. It was always confined to oldhead hiphop nerds who could be a little more open minded
Now you have young people in the general public complaining about the quality of rap, which is bad cause the general public is the last to care about the idea of quality lmao
F*** this we talking bout keeping hip hip on the forefront @Vibe name me the last drake album that was 100% a hip hop album.
F*** is we talking about my nigga.

It's not about hating on Kendrick though, it's just the topic is focused on Rap declining
If Kendrick wants to take time to drop albums thats cool, but in terms of right now at this present moment, Drake is doing more to keep rap interesting and exciting
he was seen as the backpack savior in the mainstream lupe failed to become
Atlantic gon burn in hell man

Her Loss is basically the new IYRTITL. Idk why you guys are acting like you don't like it all of a sudden
S*** became the new "I don't listen to Drake but I like this album" like NWTS and IYRTITL
