Drake has been a VERY GOOD rapper for all his career. He was 22 going bar to bar with PRIME WAYNE in 2008-2011 and he never got killed on any song. He always held his own. Even Wayne has come out to admit how being on the same songs as Drake forces him to push himself lyrically.

The people who actually know rap have given Drake his credit as a lyricist. He makes it seem easy because he makes hits just as well as he drops lyrically deep cuts and it confuses people because no one else can do it like he does, so they'll nitpick as little silly things that don't matter and try to blow those up so they can make a case that he isn't as good as he used to be but the truth is that he's A LOT better now. He's fully settled into his abilities now and he doesn't need to show off/prove himself to anyone anymore. That's why it all feels so effortless now and you can hear it in his songs from like 2019.

To me, the run of So Far Gone to If You’re Reading This should be critically acclaimed, i’m not sure if it is or not but those are fantastic albums and i love them, they’re on the level of the examples OP said like frank ocean’s work though maybe not kanye’s but anyway point being Drake is a great artist. maybe not so much these days though. hasn’t put out a great project since 2015.
