Your taste not better than anyone else really into music. Stop being this corny lmao

Ur a knee deep stan to the point where it affects your judgement. More power to you cuz u enjoy it, however to the rest of us the picture looks way different. Drake was making all time great music at some
    point, he’s not anymore

Thought they didn't care about those "nerds" tho

lol true, on another note him getting booed from Camp Flognaw showed a chip in Drakes armor tbh

As diverse as he his, he will never gain that indie audience

He obviously doesn’t have to cause he’s still one of the biggest rappers ever but it’s interesting to note

like even if he went on a streak trying to cater to them, it would be a dead mission cause he will never be fully accepted

i am not seeing the comparison between toosie slide and provider lmao

I think the perception of Drake declining in quality amongst a lot of music heads stems from one thing: a lot of his lyrics in deep cuts now don’t appeal to people who aren’t that invested in the lore of Drake

Cause the quality of lyricism/flow hasn’t really declined if you listen to his projects lbr. The great bars are just as well written as ever and the mediocre bars are just as mediocre as the ones before. He’s still a hook god and has a great ear for production. His voice is as much of a joy to listen to now as it was then - and even smoother as he has become more seasoned. The level of versatility is pretty much the same

But that’s the most tangible change since 2016 that I’ve observed. There is no longer that sense of “even if you hate this guy, he’s expressing sentiments that even the biggest detractors f*** with” in nearly every song

And the decline of this + the growing accessibility of his hits leads to the perception that he has drastically declined all over. So in short, people are overblowing this so-called decline in quality. Also the cover art is starting to suck

stopped reading at the first sentence cuz u gonna have to provide proof for that claim: "drake's benefits are very minimal..."

we don't know what type of deals he signs, it might be small compared to what the company is getting but a huge difference from what the second/third/4th "cash cow" is getting (idk)

I think we need to stop here cuz we literally don't know
(I dont care enough to speculate any further)

    have a nice day/evening nonetheless

His FIRST deal was 20 million with Apple. Google is your friend

u couldve stated that in the initial reply
but I see u wanna be snarky and s***

also since when is 20 million "very minimal" for music industry standards lol

and if drake doesnt need them...why are is he signing deals that give him "very minimal" payoffs versus what the company is getting?

Yea that was corny but I have no idea why he would want that indie audience while he's the biggest rapper in the world, it's just what happens when u at the top of the game commercially.

Great music can be many things lol accessibility is not the golden factor that makes music great

His music is super accessible. More than ever. NWTS, IYRT and Take Care were groundbreaking. Nowadays his work is leaning way more into existing mainstream tendencies rather than redefining them. That’s the result of not keeping it all the way OVO with the production.

His lyrics and songwriting also fell off. He sounds jaded, complacent. Repeating the same old hollywood tropes without a fresh spin. The melodies and delivery aren’t as interesting & unique as they used to be.

There are flashes of greatness but nothing consistent. He’s mostly coasting.

It’s tough to be a rapper for as long as he has, trying to dominate the charts. I’m very grateful with what I’ve gotten out of Drake. The golden days been over, though.

Eeeh I kinda feel you but at the same time CLB didn't feel that way at all to me with songs like N 2 Deep, TSU,etc.

Wildest thing is hearing someone who enjoys alternative and hip hop be snubby about drake

Like nigga have you heard feel no ways

Just an instance of narrative and aesthetic overruling fact

you mentioning feel no ways and saying he is on ye level is the whole joke

that’s a ye beat & something drake would normally never get on

if he had ye ear for production then maybe he could be

He literally makes similar types of music to the guys music virgins worship like frank ocean and kanye

He just makes more maximalist version of that style and leans into the mainstream more lol but really they’ll have you believe it’s a case of a pop construction being the biggest artist on earth when it’s more like the best artist being the biggest artist. He reminds me of what the smiths did in the late 80s for indie rock, but like musically drake is in the same ball park as all the “forward thinking” guys

On the sonic and structural level there’s like no difference between a song like toosie side or provider lol

Honestly he IS in that level of artistry just a fact but a lot of so called objectively music fans (fantano types) be getting caught up in perception and narrative

You’ve never actually listened to The Smiths

It has a handful of songs that restored the feeling. That’s why I believe he still has at least one classic in him, his interests are just elsewhere.

None of it even matters because all of them still listen to Drake religiously now like they did then. The only difference is that it's now cool to act like you don't f*** with Drake's music in public, while you listen to it religiously in the privacy of your home/car.
