    Dead Man Walking

The seeds for Dead Man Walking, believe it or not goes back to January ... 1965!

David Bowie is only 18yo recording “I Pity The Fool”, a Bobby Bland cover as his second single.

But Bowie isn’t the only superstar-in-the-making present in at recording session that day, the studio guitarist performing is none other than Jimmy Page, 21 years old already well established in the business, even laying down guitar performances on hit singles over France.

Jimmy Page was very excited to show off his new toy, a fuzz box, and sure excited to make the most of it for this recording but it doesn’t take off, so in some way to make it up for it Jimmy plays a riff to David that he doesn’t know much what to do with:

I've got this riff and I can't do anything with it. Do you want it?

It sure grabbed the young David Bowie attention as he kept it and used it 5y later on his song “The Supermen”.

What does this has to do with Dead Man Walking? well somehow out of the blue, in 1996 i guess David Bowie woke up one fine day and said to himself “let me get back to that riff” and used it again through out this song.

Reeves Gabrels, the guitarist for David Bowie during this whole era recalls:

It does sound fairly Page-y, like a mutated Johnny Burnette Trio thing.

So forward to 1996, David Bowie goes to perform two nights at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit, a charity show Neil Young founded in 1986 to which partial proceeds benefited the Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs as Neil Young’s son Ben Young heavily suffers from.

One of the thrusts of the program is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology.

Here’s a video of Bowies performances for both nights:

The set list includes for the first night:
    1 Aladdin Sane
    2 The Jean Genie
3 I’m A Hog For You (cover of The Coasters)
    4 I Can’t Read
5 The Man Who Sold The World
    6 “Heroes”
    7 Let’s Dance

    And second night:
    1 Aladdin Sane
    2 The Jean Genie
3 You And I George (cover of Stan Kenton)
    4 I Can’t Read
5 The Man Who Sold The World
    6 China Girl
    7 “Heroes”
8 White Light/White Heat (cover of The Velvet Underground)

Of course Neil Young naturally also performed for both nights and he is quite known to jam live, as in improvise and enjoy himself, pushing into noisy scene sometimes i’d even say myself, especially with his Crazy Horse bandmates!

He just like to play around during some songs instrumental section and expand them for minutes, which I’m sure he did at that show, to which Bowie recalls:

They began to dance, turning around, like in a tribal circle, very slowly. And it seemed to me that they were doing that to catch back their dreams, to find youth again, to not allow the energy to escape…”Dead Man Walking” is a sort of homage to rock and roll that is still young while we are all growing old.

There was a sense of grace and dignity about what they were doing, and also an incredible verve and energy. It was very moving, watching them work under the moon

Dead Man Walking’s second verse is Bowie’s dream memory of that night, a realization that he, too, had become a crazy old man dancing under the moon:

Three old men dancing under the lamplight
    Shaking their s***and their bones
And the boys that we were ...

actually im dumb because he re-recorded supermen during that era as the new changesnowbowie showcases it

so that’s how he got back to that riff he just happened to bring back the song and revisited it to do this acoustic reworked stuff and i guess that riff came on along to what became dead man walking
