So do y’all think there was a chance Nicky liked Bear before he made the wish? Seemed like there some hints to it but they never made it clear (which added to the strength of the plot imo)
Their interactions pre wish gave me “he’s like a younger brother” vibe to me. Think it was made most clear when she said “ew” when Ian called Nikki Bear’s girl. Also in that she was seeing Ian casually which showed she just saw something different in Ian than she did with Bear, even though they all worked in the same spot. I think asking him about Sarah was another indicator, she was trying to set them up rather than hint she was interested in him for herself. And finally, that question if he likes her. I think it was a set up for if he answered yes then she could friendzone him. I don’t think Nikki was naive at all to Bears crush, I think she genuinely only saw him as a friend only
I think what's so interesting about this film is the idea of bodily autonomy and consent.
Bear's crime and ultimate biggest sin is taking away Nikki's ability to choose whether or not she wants to be with Bear. We of course learn later in the film that she saw him as a friend but the frustrating thing about Bear throughout the first 15-20 minutes of the film is his inability and lack of courage to tell Nikki how he feels about her. This would have allowed her to make a choice to reciprocate or say she doesn't feel the same. Bear takes away that option inadvertently. He makes a wish but he doesn't do it with this belief that it will actually work. Once he realizes that it actually DID work, that's when he has an opportunity to try to rectify things but instead he leans in and lives in the delusion that Nikki genuinely loves him.
very interesting stuff and im wondering if other people picked up on this idea.

I think he believed it was a possibility at first that the wish had worked but chose to think she actually liked him and it only really got confirmed at the dinner when he finds out she lied about her dad having cancer, him choosing to continue being with her after that was definitely immoral and even his friend was telling him he was taking advantage of her (for a differently perceived reason). Also the first time he thinks he has a chance to cancel the wish he tries to bargain and have it altered showing he still desired control over her, really the main reason why I don’t have a lot of sympathy for him at the end. he was one of those i’m a nice guy so I deserve what makes me happy type losers that think they’re not doing anything wrong

YEA YEA him trying to simply alter the wish, not undo it totally. I didn't even think about that as his way to still be with her.

I think she wasn't set into anything, she was a lil playful but who knows. It's his fault for not being honest about his feelings and opening that door to begin with. They did a really good job of showing that balance before he made the wish and everything. Ian could've just been more confident and direct for all we know. We know he was a bad friend based on the advice he was giving. + Asking him about Sarah could've been setting Bear up or it could've been just her poking to see where his head was at about any thing romantically. Is he into our friend or is is his mind elsewhere? idk I think it's not as straightforward as it seems. We know she saw him as a friend only through a girl who was a lil jealous and has a crush on him! (She was even hinting on them kissing, knowing that he has a gf) so who even knows how reliable that could've been.
Again, the film does a really good job of showing social complexities like that between friends and people. Some things are unspoken, some things are unknown until we make them known! The main thing is clear though he should've just shared his feelings to begin with.

curry barker has said it’s not impossible that she liked him . She showed signs of liking him . She wanted him to be bold enough to admit it . She only saw him as a brother and friend because he never in anyway made it clear he wanted more . Originally remember he wanted to do it at trivia night where they drunk and group gathering like proposing in public . She gave him the chance privately and he didn’t take it . She gave him layup with Sarah he declined it because he was obsessed . Then later when Sarah confesses he is in . He fears rejection as many do . Sarah still applies for schools and takes a risk . From what I’m remembering he doesn’t mention applying to a school. Someone mentioned with tiger eye she literally gives her will

is it truly that hard to love me or be with me . Made it clear it was a hostage situation he wanted her to develop Stockholm syndrome and stop fighting the spirit . Why the spirit was doing increasingly weird things was likely real Nikki trying to push him away . Disturb him to point he would free her . Feeding the cat for sure . Killing Sarah freaky Nikki . The Hansel gretel story time real Nikki
This was fantastic. Up there with The Drama for my favourite movies of the year so far.
Never watched Curry's stuff before but he's a pro behind the camera. The use of lighting in this was A1
Horror is in such a good place right now, what a treat

I agree. I definitely think there were signs that she was at least open to him in a romantic way... MAYBE. I mean regardless of whether or not she was interested in him, he still should have went for it. Knowing what we know later about Nikki and his friend having a on again off again fling, I do wonder why his friend was pushing for him to tell her that he liked her though

The use of that amber tone with the lights in the apartment and bar was so good.

Yeah that scene of her pleading is probably what stuck with me the most. Sooo f\*\*\*ed
I think what makes this movie really hit home is the relatable theme of having that certain crush that we always longed to be with. This movie is arguably designed to invoke past feelings/memories in the watcher which makes it that much more powerful

when she dies and shorty tells him this is all your fault im like so true man
boy was immature as hell I wish she loved me more than anything in the world like its not even her he created an alternate reality and got stuck in it. sort of how i feel about time travel movies like well...when you go back to make everything change for you are you really even sharing life or manipulating everything to a t. obviously theres a gradation to this and he just starkly removed her ability to take part
when the guys tone on the phone shifts when he puts her on the phone :clapdead:

The only thing I would’ve liked to see would’ve been if at some point before it got too crazy, he was given some sort of easy way to fix everything but chose not to take advantage of it in order to keep her the way she was

i feel like most people watching will have been in one of the four roles in the friend group. or even the people at the party :shrek:

lmao movie had legit hilarious moments, really hit on all cylinders for me. Also when Bear is talking to Freaky Nikki saying stuff like ‘you were perfect before, just beautiful’ showed again how much of a selfish prick the guy was
This is one of those movies where a rewatch is much needed. Feel like I missed a bunch of little things
