although this is kind of true. I don't think The Irishman would ever get a Criterion release if it wasn't a NF release
because it probably wouldn't need one
Not sure they’ll include “Italianamerican” doc with The Irishman or somethin else
Netflix pressures them to release s*** that criterion possibly shouldn't worry about while some films that actually need a good release don't get the attention they need.
And not like Netflix couldn't release Blus themselves if they wanted to..
wouldn't this mean more money for criterion to license and release other stuff? kinda like that whole michael bay crap with armageddon and the rock

Exactly. Netflix has released Blu-Ray's before too with Stranger Things and House of Cards.
Giving Netflix a free pass for Criterion copies will stop other, better and more needed films from being restored.
but they will also fly off the shelves which gives the company more leeway to restore obscure s*** that will sell a tiny fraction in comparison

Will they?
Most people aren't really going to pay $20-40 for a film that will always stay on Netflix. I'll only get one if I ever cancel my subscription.

Possible. But you know that Netflix is keeping a majority of that money for these releases. And like dude said that s*** is forever on Netflix, not sure how high those sales really are gonna be.
In any case they have done big releases (like Silence of the Lambs) of films that actually warrant restorations plus would have good bonus content due to age.
This Netflix s*** just feels like Netflix has absurd leverage to get Criterion to release some s*** that maybe should not be in the Collection. Tbh that's what I think about most recent Hollywood films. I don't really want them in there because it seems like a circlejerk of films with no impact (yet) that don't need restorations anyway. Recent foreign films at least help the spread of films less readily available.

if i can throw a criterion buster scruggs in my coens section itll be worth it
: and they release a handful of new restorations every dang month so it doesnt seem like a big deal to me
Doesn’t seem like the big deal some of y’all are making it. It’s morr funding for Criterion & anyone who wants Netflix releases with extra features can now attain them in physical format. Everyone wins.
If you’re trying to gatekeep new movies from coming into the collection which I understand considering impactful movies have been the source of restorations & releases then I get it. But also, kind of pretentious as well.
Criterion isn’t a highschool class with 30 people I’m sure they can manage between Netflix releases and other projects.
I wish they were picky towards Netflix branded releases. Ion care other ones except what type of s*** I like.

Buster Scruggs? That’s what I’m talking about keep that s*** away lmao
Yeah and if they keep focusing on random s*** Netflix and wants to push out theyll never release zerkalo. Do you want that Elric?

I’m pretty sure your 30ppl joke isn’t actually all that far from the truth. Criterion is smaller than you might think because they get a lot of credit for s*** they don’t do. Tons of their restorations are simply bought (shoutout l’immagine ritrovata f.e.).
And in any case they are limited in the number of releases a they can do each month also because they are so expensive to buy so the average consumer isn’t gonna buy a majority of the releases each month or each sale. High sellers like Lynch, Tark, Anderson are better releases spaced out. Netflix releases probably space that out even more.
I just fear that this will push releases of films that are only available on DVD and without good restorations (or not available at all) for s***ty films that criterion would never release if there wasn’t the Netflix connection that are available on NF 24/7.
Can someone make a list of essentials? I just got into this and iv seen most of ingar bergmans work and House was great

night of the hunter was a good movie
crazy film
one of the strangest films i've seen. mitchum lowkey scared the s*** outta me
the switch up in style from expressionistic to this little fake "saga" style during the river was so f***ing cool. only thing that i kinda disliked was the child actin

my mom loved the movie growing up so i knew about it but after watching it for myself i can see why, shes always loved film noir style
and the kids played their parts tbh, none of em were in any movies after
one of the best Mitchum performances
