The virus cant live on surfaces for weeks. It seems it can live the longest on plastic, like 3 or 4 days max

It’s about the rate of infection though. Right now it’s around 1 for Italy, lower than the rate of infection of the seasonal flu. An epidemic with R less than 1 will gradually disappear

Italy is going to lift the restrictions in Mid May, same as Spain. Second outbreaks in Europe will be easier to deal with

the purpose of social distancing is not primarily to stop the infection, but to ease the pressure on the health infrastructure. It caught Italy, Spain, Germany and France by surprise (community clusters surged in numbers all of a sudden), so hospitals were exhausted.

In the next outbreaks, they will already be new mechanisms to track and stop the spread, as well as ways of easing the pressure on the health infrastructure. New testing kits will be produced, governments will be able to detect cases quicker... etc.

Also, EU can’t go beyond May with its economy being frozen. Austria is already lifting restrictions cause they found out that more people would die under social distancing, for example.

EU commissioner was also talking about how the elders will be socially distancing until they find the vaccine today, which suggests that restrictions will be lifted for the younger populations soon
