One of the best movie of all timd
The more I think on this, the more I really like it. It already feels underappreciated due to the year it came out in.
Wish we knew what Nolan was doing next bc I can see him taking a break after all the hooplah from WB and the media trying to throw him under the bus
Chris Nolan's first short film surfaced online
i swear this has been online for some time now

For about a month.
Doodlebug has been available for years. Larceny still hasn't been found.

yeah for some reason i thought it was much longer but you're right.
From the dude on letterboxd who found it:
I've located this after about 4 months of searching and waiting and a long email exchange. It is Christopher Nolan's 1989 short film Tarantella, which until now was unavailable to the public. Nolan is the director of the Dark Knight trilogy and many other very famous mainstream films.
It is one of three short films that he released before his debut feature film Following; Doodlebug was released as a bonus feature through Criterion (also on YouTube), Larceny debuted at Cambridge Film Festival in 1996 (I have confirmation on the existence of multiple VHS copies, but for now, it's still lost), and Tarantella aired on a Chicago PBS station called WTTW on an hour-long independent filmmaking showcase program called Image Union in 1990.
Media Burn Archive (which is where I linked) is a website run by the creator and producer of Image Union, an independent filmmaking showcase television show that would air on Chicago's PBS station WTTW. In episode 1313, aired on 09-12-1990 (NOT 1989), Tarantella was one of those independent films showcased. This episode was not uploaded to Media Burn until very very recently, directly as a result of my efforts to locate the short film. Christopher Nolan was a complete nobody at the time -- scoring this slot was his first opportunity to publicly show any of his work. Seeing as this was so long ago, and Nolan was unknown at the time, details on this short were scarce. There was VERY limited information online about this, with the most concrete information being available here: collections-search.bfi.org.uk/web/Details/ChoiceFilmWorks/150658321
(Its existence is also mentioned briefly in a Criterion discussion on Following that is available on YouTube here: youtu.be/jUpA7Qma_9E)The reason this is finally available NOW is because I sent an email to Tom Weinberg, who runs Media Burn and created and produced the Image Union show. This was all the way back in March of this year. He connected me with Jamie Ceaser, the producer for this era of the show (and subsequently this episode). They were able to contact the WTTW archive's librarian and find the physical copy in the "deep tunnels of where old videos live." I waited since the end of April this year to get access to this via Media Burn, and now all of you can watch it too!

The views on the film got def affected by the context of its release

Doodlebug was so much better than this one
It was also made a decade later.
movie could’ve been decade defining but COVID ruined that
Nolan ruined that by making a s***ty movie

HIS BEST MOVIE IDC
You need to watch it again second time watch the viewer is inverted it’s wild
In a way it’s like you’ve only seen half the movie after the first watch
Saw it for the first time but definitely one of the best films of Nolan.
David Washington and Robert Pattinson have a great future ahead of them. Pattinson btw looks amazing as batman, but considering its DC it seems a risky move
