Its my belief that Nolan strongly dislikes showing violence. Hes always so so....so bad at it. Either its telegraphed fight scenes with terrible choreography or (my biggest pet peeve with him) whenever someone gets shot. It's always ...off...somehow. that factory gunshot noise he uses, the way the squib or spark go off, a delay in motion and reaction. Its so annoying. Super obvious in tdkr and somewhat noticeable in Dunkirk.

    Its infuriating

The most effective gunshot in a Nolan movie I think is when Joker shoots the cop in the eighteen-wheeler and that's off-screen lol

G the audience did a huge GASP when that scene happened. It was great

Just reaffirmed my stance that the man either hates gore in a sense or just dislikes violence.

One of the most FRUSTRATING moments is the first "how I got these scars" moment where he....cuts MJWs face??? I guess??? The audience doesn't see and is left to interpret what happened but the moment completely loses traction once the death isn't shown. He does that all the time. All we are left with is a musical cue

I really love this joker bus driver gun shot for how nonchalant it is

I think it works in a lot of other areas. The entirety of the Prestige has sudden cuts where violence happens and it's perfect; the guy getting crunched by the ship in Dunkirk or the cop getting shot by TDK are good examples too.

I think he likes it bc it's an easy way to navigate a PG-13 rating if your movie has a ton of violence.

does anyone else thinking seeing that backwards fighting stuff is not interesting or fun to look at?

the situations, plot, motives of the missions involving the time stuff is all mind boggling is all engaging and cool. the car flip backwards stuff is all good and like other big stuff

but two people flailing and fumbling just isnt cool to look at?? im sure they were crazy hard to choreograph and shoot, but it just isnt striking imo

Yeah I didn't like the backward fighting at all. Had a hard time telling what was going on.

    Especially the finally battle

To me the hallway fight scene hit real hard for me when I realised protagonist was fighting himself, which was mad to me. The battle scene in the final had a lot going on and I wasn't always sure what was happening

I agree it was a cool idea that they we're fighting themselves I just didn't find it interesting to look at.

I feel they could have done more interesting stuff with it, but Nolan's never been great with hand to hand combat.

The SWAT guy on the ground flailing that one time was effective in the theater from what I saw and my gf audibly gasped when she saw it because it looked so unnerving.

I mean that kitchen fight scene was fantastic hand to hand combat

Definitely by far the best that Nolan has done with combat so far (though I do love the Batman and Bane fight scenes in TDKR also)

Ok I thought I was doing quite well at first then got completely lost in the third act.

  • Dec 2, 2020

Nolan's fight scenes still average. You don't even hear the effect of the impact of a punch which is weird

I hate it when I watch a movie I don't understand but a few YouTube videos can make me appreciate the movie

The only thing I didn't pick up on during my first watch was why they had to stop d***head from killing himself.

I can’t believe Nolan really made the audio this s***ty AND THEN had the characters go f***ing water skiing and had heavy exposition dialogue lmfaoo wtf was he thinking

And a f***ing wheelchair has better delivery than JDW. Felt like bro was a complete robot reciting words from paper.

I think the Characters were cliche and lacked depth. The dialogue was also cliche or pretty average. It's the plot and the complexity of it that makes the movie. S*** is like a puzzle and I feel the urge to watch the movie again and understand it better/solve the puzzle

Watched this last night. really wanted to like this but this is so unnecessarily convoluted and doubles down on inception’s biggest problems. These are sci fi movies not about characters or emotions or ideas or human experience at all. They’re just self-contained gadgets that are amusing but mechanical, cold, sterile. they ride such a fine line between clever and stupid. for all the complaints of Stanley kubrick movies leaving people feeling cold and detached, those movies are actually trying to say something. people obsessively theorize and interpret them beyond just their basic plot. What’s really going on in this movies besides just trying to be a logic puzzle?

and holy s*** is john david washington miscast. this guy cannot deliver a line to save his life
