im not gonna go as far as to say its his best (though I think right now I am loving this record as much as I loved Because the Internet and Kauai, my 2 favs from Bino), but it is shocking to me to see hate for this record. Awaken my Love was derivative dogshit and Atavista was an immensely mixed bag so its laughable to see people praising those 2 records but tearing this down. This feels like Gambinos most definitive album yet. Just pure confidence here to own his sound. Where in the past it felt like he either was too obsessed with his influences or too scared of being seen as corny to the point of making safe ass derivative critic bait (Camp and Awaken my Love respectively) or just throwing s*** on the wall (Atavista), here it seems he's looked at his past work and seen what was truly genuine to him and not just a rip off or try hard s*** and is just owning it
not everything works. Amaarae is absolute dogshit on Talkin my S***. Songs like We Are God, the Khruangbin song, A Place Where Loves Go and the Legend song are either s*** or just boring. But for the most part, this is a really strong album.
My highlights:
Lithonia (i knew not to trust this sites opinion on music as soon as I saw hate for this song. Instantly a top 5 single of the year)
Steps Beach
Got to Be
Real Love
In The Night
Yoshinoya
No Excuses
Cruisin
I mean I ain’t rly “y’all” I just be lurkin and s***. For me, as a world champion Donald glover eater who has absorbed almost everything this man has put out and then some, I feel like I’m not hearing the same album. Real Love is some of the most disgustingly saccharine pop bullshit I’ve heard in I don’t know how long. I have no idea how Donald seriously feels like this is a fitting close to the CG moniker personally. That’s just me though
Real Love is dope its sweet

It’s clear that you’re ever loving and everyone can see

I wanna be someone you can count on

So is the movie a real thing or solely exists as the albums concept
it’s a short film according to his recent hot ones interview
we don’t know the length yet, all we have is the trailer, I’m guessing 40-60min or something like that
I think this would be better without the movie soundbites... takes you out of the music instead of having smooth transitions between tracks
The only ‘sonically all over the place’ releases Gambino has ever had are 3.15.20/Atavista and this. Everything else was way more cohesive
Ngl i had to relisten to BTI after your comment and i guess i remember it being more over the place than it actually is

Im looking forward to the movie just as much. He aint missed for me in terms of shows. Swarm aint perfect, but the lead acting is wonderful and it was a very intriguing watch
Mr and Mrs Smith was great to me aswell, he kills it every time with the therapy episodes. That Sopranos influence crazy

Yeah it's boring, I hate this
Couldn’t agree less with the last point. I love AML and Atavista more but this album feels like the most we’ve had Donald’s vocals at the fore front clearly since STN MTN / Kauai
I just think there are multiple songs on this where donald is completely put to the side by features that are literally on the track longer than he is and tracks that are almost entirely instrumental outside of donald occasionally coming in for a repeated melody that gets lost in the background
a few more where his vocals take up the majority of the song but he sounds so subdued that the second a feature verse comes in its like night and day difference in presence
im glad everyone else is loving it its just not hitting for me but who knows maybe its a grower
hate the autotuned hook thing he loves doing at the moment too it never sounds more interesting than it would without it
Got blue balled so hard after that intro on Got To Be
Pissed me off lol
Lol yep if he made that part a full song it would've been a hit, instead he decided to follow it up with that Y2K ass 2nd half smh

What song
Steps Beach
Yoshinoya
No Excuses
Dadvocate
Running Around
In The Night
A Place Where Love Goes
Definitely my favorites. Rest of the tracks are great as well. I do feel like there could've been a bit more to the album, feel like tracks like Warlords, Couldn't Be Y'all, and Say Less would've been able to fit on it perfectly. <But for what this is, it's an excellent album and he ends on a high note with it.
