I mean pitchfork didn’t s*** on this album for being experimental they did it because the experiments weren’t well executed, it wasn’t catchy, it was bloated, and it seemed like shallow experimentation just trying to be weird. It was well known at the time th flaming lips guy worked on this and it wasn’t that out his wheelhouse, and in the context of who Miley was it just seemed hollow and substance less just head in the clouds s***. Ppl saw it as a rich kid trying to be “rebellious” and coming off tone deaf and hollow. Miley Cyrus in general wasn’t very liked. Honestly a lot of that album wasn’t even that far out there. It was a white girl child actor that tried to be edgy and a “bad girl” by shaking her sit bones and doing s***ty rap music then pivoted into this experimental 23 song album w the flaming lips producer and Mike will about how much she loves d**** lol

Charli comes from a lineage of pop and hyperpop that was loved as super different and cool backed with substance and people including pitchfork have loved her since 2017 because her music is catchy, the substance to her style, how consistently she makes tight well executed albums etc. people just like her experiments more. She wasn’t very popular til recently charli is anything but insincere and “label manufactured” lmao she was a niche weird hyperpop artist from 2017 onwards. Her only time she did that was CRASH and if u hate brat so much u can say that too lol
