MDM soundtracked the moment of heartbreak, as well as it's immediate consequences. And while MDM is undoubtedly bleak, it also has moments of Abel indulging in his trademark toxic behaviour in order to cope with the relationships sudden end - Try Me and Wasted Times ("I hope you know this d*** is still an option") I think exemplify this notion best.
Initially, we saw this bravado return when he chose Heartless as After Hours' first single - Heartless is such a toxic anthem through & through. But when you look at it within the wider context of the album, you realise how vapid his braggadocios performance is on that track - narratively, Heartless quickly reveals itself as nothing more than a moment of d***-induced mania. What sticks with you instead, is the abundance of vulnerability Abel sheds across the album, Too Late, Hardest to Love, Scared to Live all soundtrack moments of harrowing self-reflection.
And then as I said in my previous post, we reach Until I Bleed Out and realise that he's JUST AS lonely as he was on MDM, only this time he doesn't even have the d**** to comfort him.
For the first time ever, do we see Abel beginning to reject aspects of his life & of his music that previously were crucial and all-defining: an obvious example of this is when he rejects the notion of Hollywood grandeur that he once crooned about on The Morning on Snowchild. . . "Cali was the mission but now I'm leaving".
It's why for me MDM and AH are inseparable despite being separate 'chapters' in his discography. Not only are they sonically quite alike, but thematically and chronologically, they sort of collide with each other more so than any two projects he's released.
this makes me want to play both albums back to back. Good s***

Love the track and it’s honestly a personal favourite for the second verse, but Too Late definitely sounds like an evolved take on that sound.
