I'm going to read part 1 and part 2 in like a span of 2 weeks to give my full thoughts. This feels worse than jjk and aot man.

Denji loses both pochita, his best friend and only lasting, pure relationship in his life, one he repeatedly calls the thing he loves the most, and all the checklist of dreams he managed to realize while being chainsaw man. What he gains is another chance to live his life as a normal dude, still dreaming of doing normal things like having a dog or a girlfriend, but this time without powers. He may not even live long, and he's pretty crippled as it is, but at least he will be actively involved in his own life, without falling in the trap of a overwhelming power of pochita or the abuses he faced as csm, as the scene of him letting go of the chainsaw to save asa shows. He's powerless now, at best he could sign a contract like most devil hunters, so theres no need for a makima level threat to potentially kill him.
And he doesnt seem to wanna f*** power? He never did, either on part 1 or here. His desire for s***if anything seems to be quelled, as his hypersexuality was the product of abuse by all the women interested in chainsaw's power and the sudden fame he got at the end of part 1.
I just dont think we're seeing a reset or a dream here. Denji said it felt like a dream, not that it was. Eren says the same thing in chapter 1 of aot, and we know in that case it wasnt a dream either. Characters are different than their original introduction, and react to things they shouldnt if it was Indeed a reset. Why does meowy like nayuta? Why is nayuta here in the first place instead of makima? Why is nayuta not cold and reactionless like at the end of part 1? Why does power like denji and dogs?

Now let me be frank, im not sure either what reality that Is. We know that chainsaw man's power is to remove both name and concept of the devil he eats in the present and the past, so were to assume that eating a concept erases it from the past too, negating all the events that happened.
But pochita says he doesnt know what will happen if he eats himself, so there's probably more to it in that case. Still, a re-read and a***ysis of authorial intent could help with a more satisfying answer.

Maybe the ending is too bittersweet instead of negative or positive, or maybe people feel that denji's ending should've come by his own volition, but i find it fitting for him, and original. Denji was never gonna save himself, thats what the manga has been trying to say since the very beginning. Someone, a loved one, needed to see the situation for what it was and give him a saving grace by making a very tough choice.

Pochita tried living with denji, he still fueled his desire to achieve more and more despite denji's growing desperation, he fought to keep denji alive by even eating the death devil, but they reached the finish line, and there was nothing they could do to keep going.

"there was nothing they could do to keep going"

There were many ways to save the story, it dependend on the author capability which didn't show now!

Even worse theory is that 232 is a dream, and Pochita and Denji are just suffering inside a random devil's world after being eaten. However, everything is suffering in the real world being alive, never dying, and being eaten and nibbled by bugs that run the world.

But the way denji, pochita and chainsaw man as a public figure is written, what happened in the story makes sense, so i dont get why it should be written differently. It couldve gone a different direction sure, but then the message of the story, the character arcs and what fujimoto was trying to say with this story, it would all be completely different, and thats a possibility that imo is useless to fantasize about, because its just not what the author wanted to do

For the dream s\*\*\*. Did you think he recognized anybody? It looked like he didn't recognize anyone. It's a saved game reset at level 1\. He didn't grow during or after the reset. He's back at part 1 of development. Everything between chapter 1 and 231 doesn't matter 😭😭😭

I think its very likely the characters have a recollection, however faint it is, of what happened before. Maybe denj wont remember what he did with asa, but he sure remembered that he would help her. Denji in general felt more mature, or at least less motivated by instict than he did at the beginning of part 1. Power coming to save denji could also be interpreted as her finding him and befriending him again, after all if It was the same power as early part 1, she wouldve never saved him, she hated humans.
So while the execution might be messy or too unclear, i cant fail to notice that these characters arent the same as they were in their introduction, so something must have changed them.

On your second point, in my opinion a character arc doesnt have to revolve around personal growth to be well written. I think a tragic character regression can work as much as an inspiring character progression, in opposite ways of course. Part 1 already alluded to denji's dangerous attachment to the chainsaw man persona and addiction to "the chase", so his part 2 downfall was always gonna happen.
I get that people expected denji to overcome his trauma and become free of his addictions and abuse on his own, but i feel this ending works better for what fujimoto was doing with him.

Quote me refuting anything then I've been here since chapter 30 for part 1. Part 1 is substantially worse in all aspects compared to 1. This ending is just bad.

  • Characters are still obviously influenced by their experiences (see: Meowy being close with Nayuta, Power bonding with Denji so quickly)

Really part 2 should not have been written. I didn't gain anything of value in experience or messaging through part 2 that I didn't get from part 1. Denji seems a lot smarter and thoughtful in the very last two chapters of part 1.

So did they nail the ending of the manga? Read that people were surprised that it was ending and feared it would be super abrupt.

The same denji that said he wanted ten girlfriends, stuck his face against the TV watching crowds chanting his name crying of joy and was hard sweating, on his knees begging to become chainsaw man again?

That sounds like part 2 Denji? That's the part where the church of csm tries to convince him to be their leader?

Edit: oh the scene right before he fights Makima. I guess this supports my feeling that part 2 is worse because Denji circles this same character flaw over and over, that I couldn't quickly remember which moment this was immediately.

I'll correct myself with "thoughtful," but it seemed like he grew IQ points through Fujimoto in his fight against Makima. The story written in part 1 made sense with Denji accepting the risks of CSM because of his childish reasons. He's a kid. Then, he got the biggest responsibility for the final chapter. No part 2 existing leaves it open that he can handle that responsibility.

I personally think it ended well and tells a strong story, but it has been very divisive.

Being seen as worst ending for modern shonen manga that were big.

I still like CSM universe but just think part 2 fell off quickly and the ending was awful. People in here are coping or in disbelief at the ending.

All in all, read it for yourself. You may or may not enjoy it.
