yea i wasn’t happy on my first listen tbh but i respect what him and the team went for

i’d say this is a great album that’s not for me, i’m happy for those who wanted to hear this guy do that style. it’s probably the highest level i’ve heard the 80s revivalism s***, i almost feel wrong for even calling it that

i have to give it another dedicated listen, don’t get me wrong there’s tracks on here that sound like him at his best

i really respect what they’re going for but nothing held me and demanded my attention like some of his previous work

U summarize my feelings about his artistic growth here. It’s clear that vocally he’s at his best, the production here is both unique but also paying homage to so much traditional RnB and also very much an evolution of his sounds since Sonder Son, super lush and beautiful etc but there’s something as he continues to make music that more and more fails to catch me… maybe a more generic perspective in his lyrics whereas before, despite being less refined, there was lots of angst and substance and thoughts that as a listener you immediately attribute as coming directly and exclusively “from the artist” 😵‍💫 that said this s*** really good still tho hahaha

One complaint I do have is some of my favorite tracks are annoyingly short. I guess that’s going to help him play count wise but it’s low key frustrating
