never heard of Dr John?
you gotta listen to his legendary 1968 debut Gris Gris first
“His guitar work also suffers”
allowing that people were not ready for this new style he just invented its still a truly mind blowing take. he barely played any guitar on his debut
Willy & The Poor Boys came out 3 months after Green River
I don't know who worked harder this year, CCR, Elvis, Fairport Convention or Rod Stewart. Probably Fogerty tbh. Yeah they all came out with a mountain of music but only Fogerty was writing, producing, playing and singing everything himself

i feel like Fairport evolved more over the course of the year than CCR tbh. plus CCR had slightly shorter albums. but i guess individual wise fogerty was doing much heavier lifting than any of fairport
looks like ccr band members were still playing their parts though. i dont really know which guitar parts are the other fogerty brother though tbh seems like sometimes john fogerty probably has a couple going on

You ever feel like Crazy Horse at least partly inspired Effigy?

no
but now that you mention it i do some some similarities between the two bands in general. maybe just pulling from similar influences.
or maybe buffalo influenced ccr?

Idk it just sounds alot like them attempting an epic Cowgirl or Down By The River type excursion (a style that didn't really exist till Neil conjured it)
Neil gets mega points for evolving in one year span as well

i feel like its a kind of attempt at a darker, harder, less R&B version of some of those other CCR songs. never really thought of effigy as an epic like that tbh but maybe thats just cuz it doesnt hit me anywhere near the level those 2 Neil epics. quality and emotion wise. still a highlight for its album
i can see it tho. also just general 1969 malaise in there too (for both artists). kind of a weird outlier for ccr

yeah thats what I mean, its pretty unique for them. maybe they wee thinking Quicksilver or one of their SF peers.
