Listening to Safe as Milk stereo for the first time in a few years rn

Great album. Easy to just throw on and vibe out.

Is it guilty of that fold over center channel vocal thing you were talking about? Love the way the theremin pans on Electricity and Beefheart uses one of his mid vocal registers on the left channel and then his ungodly low register on the right channel going back and forth with himself

Electricity go so hard you can break your neck if you're trying to keep up

Listening to the mono for the first time in years
right off the bat I noticed it's harder to hear Cooders slide guitar which used to be very clear on the left channel
Dropout Boogie is a shade too fast and loses some of its menacing scuzzy swagger. Buzzsaw guitars less potent.
Electricity go so hard you can break your neck if you're trying to keep up
Definitely the highlight. It’s an awesome energetic follow up to the surprisingly beautifully slow I’m Glad.

yeah i think if the vocals were more centered it might overtake the mono for me because of clarity of guitars. probably one where i could pick winners of both versions
ive also found that the extreme separation bothers me less when im already familiar with the album. but i guess years ago I originally found the hard panned vocals so distracting i just deleted the stereo entirely

Thank god
you always disagree so heavily on this I thought I was starting to lose it
A lot of my first listens are in a car so I don’t think I notice a lot of these stereo and mono differences that well.

jazz might have also helped me get a tad more accustomed to hard panned rhythm sections tbh. still bothers me but that part isnt a total dealbreaker for this safe as milk mix
mono almost always has the slightly romantic illogical aspect of it just sounding "older" though
for rock/pop

Just when you think I'm Glad is gonna stay in the traditional doo woo ballad format Beef goes super Saiyan on the bridge
"Pleeeeeeeease come back and let the...... SUUUUUUUUUUN
shine through"

That was me and my early twenties which might be part of the reason I didn't care for a long time either

Agreed it definitely sounds more clean and modern on stereo. I really want to hear every nuance of these guitars and beefheart's voice
probably the most potent rock and roll singer there was with infinite detail to his performances

true but sometimes you want that voice in the middle instead of crammed in one ear. definitely differs a lot with headphones vs speakers though (i was just listening on headphones rn)
feel like mono also needs some more raw volume power to appreciate a few of these things. like if you switch back and forth mono vs stereo itll sound neutered in mono but if you crank the mono and sit with it it can be powerful af

Yeah I'm on headphones right now and on stereo some of the vocals are still centered

also do you know which version of the mono you have? apparently up to a certain recent point all the mono reissues were just the inferior fold-down
